Coming Soon: Texas811’s Statewide 811 Day Initiatives

With 811 Day just around the corner, Texas811 is preparing a variety of statewide efforts to keep safe digging top of mind. From local outreach in high-traffic community spaces to broadcast and digital media partnerships, we’re building visibility across channels to reach both professionals and the general public.

Look out for Texas811 signage at upcoming events for the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers as part of a national awareness campaign. We’re also continuing work with Phillips 66 and Audacy to support the message through radio and targeted geofencing tied to key 811 Day activations.

We’re especially excited to unveil our newly redesigned website built to make navigating Texas811’s tools and resources easier than ever. And for the first time, we’ll be debuting the Texas811 Podcast, launching on 811 Day. This brand-new initiative gives us a fresh way to share stories, insights, and industry perspectives, and we can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’ve been working on.

We Need to Expand How We Look at Damage Prevention

Excavators, contacting 811 before they dig, are the cornerstone of utility damage prevention. For 50 years, education and outreach have preached the importance of excavators making that initial contact. This has prevented billions of dollars of damage to underground facilities ever since.

But there is a blind spot. When an excavation occurs without an 811 ticket, facility owners don’t have an opportunity to mark the location of their lines, or to have a representative present during the excavation. Those underground lines are unprotected.

Damage caused by excavations without an 811 ticket is huge. CGA data says that 24% of all damages nationwide result from excavations without a 811 ticket. We need a way to protect high-value underground facilities even when there is no 811 ticket.

Texas811 Guardian can do that.

Here’s how.

  • Fiber Optic lines within approximately 30 feet of an underground facility can detect and identify unique vibration signatures in the area which represent excavation activity.
  • Once excavation activity is detected, an alert is sent to Texas811. Texas811 queries its ticket database to determine if there is an active ticket at the location.
  • If yes, the incident is recorded for regulatory purposes but is not sent to the facility operator.
  • If there is not an active 811 ticket, an alert is sent to the facility operator with the type of excavation, manual or mechanical, the exact GPS location notifying them of the unauthorized excavation activity, and the incident is recorded for regulatory purposes.
  • The facility operator can respond to the excavation site to intervene before damage occurs.
