Heritage Sites Reopen for the Season

Memorial Day Weekend

The park is thrilled to announce that a handful of heritage sites reopen this upcoming weekend! They are all linked by the Thames River and capture the history and culture of life along the storied waterway.


Visitors can experience the region’s many historic destinations that provide guided tours, interactive museums and breathtaking views. Grab your family and friends and visit your new favorite park this weekend and all summer long.

NEW LONDON

Fort Trumbull State Park

Opening Day: Saturday, May 24


Nestled close to the mouth of the Thames River, the fort features walking paths, an interactive museum and fishing piers. Exhibits in the Visitor Center Museum depict Fort Trumbull’s role in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, WW I, WW II and the Cold War. Park grounds are open from 8am to sunset all year round.

GROTON

Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park

Opening Day: Saturday, May 24


Fort Griswold rests on a vantage point above the Thames River, containing the remains of a Revolutionary War fort and a 135-foot obelisk monument to pay tribute to those who died defending it during the 1781 Battle of Groton Heights.


Experience the thrill of climbing to the top of the Groton Monument, visit the Monument House Museum or tour the historical battlefield during your visit. Park grounds are open from 8am to sunset all year round.

Ebenezer Avery House

Opening Day: Saturday, May 24


The Ebenezer Avery House is where wounded soldiers were transported after the Battle of Groton Heights on September 6, 1781. The structure itself was relocated from its original Groton Bank location to the grounds of the Fort Griswold Battlefield and is open to the public as a museum. It was restored and furnished by The Avery Memorial Association with the antiques of the revolutionary period.

Avery-Copp House Museum

Opening Day: Saturday, May 24


The Avery-Copp House celebrates the historic home of the Avery and Copp families along the banks of the Thames River. It contains original furnishings, preserving it as a time capsule that reflects the daily life of the family prior to 1930. Tours are provided through the lens of the Irish immigrant domestic servants who lived and worked in the home.
