As the weather is getting warmer, we are bringing back a piece written by Nathan Ing, a former pharmacy student at TFHT.
The long winter is over and it looks like the warm weather and sun are here to stay! Time to run to the beach, bring out the barbecue and soak up some sun. Before we head out let’s take some time to remember some sun safety tips!
- Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) radiation which is responsible for the damaging effects of sunlight. There is both UVA and UVB radiation. An easy way to remind you of the effects is UVB as B for burn and UVA as A for aging. Both UVA and UVB increase your risk of skin cancer which is highly preventable by practicing sun safety.
- Sunscreen is an effective way to prevent the short term and long term effects of skin damage and everyone should be using sunscreen. Look for a product that is “Broad spectrum” which will protect you from both UVA and UVB.
- The sun protection factor (SPF) is the ability of sunscreen to prevent reddening of the skin from sunlight. Aim to use products with SPF 30 as they will provide adequate protection and SPF 50 will only provide a small additional benefit.
- The timing of sunscreen application is also important. Sunscreen needs to form a film on your skin to protect you so apply 15-30 minutes before heading out into sunlight.
- When applying sunscreen, it is easy to remember the “teaspoon method”.
- 1 teaspoon for the neck and face
- 2 teaspoons total for the chest and back
- 2 teaspoons for each leg
- Remember to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or after swimming.
- Stay in the shade as much as possible when outdoors.
- Avoid the sun during its strongest period which is from 10 AM to 4 PM.
- Wear protective clothing such as long sleeve shirts, pants, hats, gloves as well as sunglasses.
With these tips in mind you can have a safe and fun summer!

In honour of World Environment Day, here are some tips to make grocery shopping and packing lunches more environmentally friendly!
Use a reusable straw. They can even be purchased at the dollar store!
Bring your own water bottle, instead of buying and tossing plastic ones. (Bonus: you can add lemon and other fruit to flavour your water!)
Don't stop at reusable grocery bags - get your hands on reusable produce bags, too!
Use reusable snack bags for lunches.
Use reusable utensils in steel or bamboo and use a wrap to keep them from getting lost.
Opt for glass containers, like mason jars! That way, you can reuse containers, use less plastic, and see your healthy, colourful lunches! See some recipe ideas below!
