As we head into a New Year, we do so with more excitement, energy and enthusiasm, thanks in large part to the RIEP Network of committed members, volunteers, RIEP staff team, local businesses, community organizations, NGO’s and partners who collaboratively enabled the development and delivery of new services, programs, and events to communities across BC’s islands and remote coastal communities.

Building A Vibrant Rural Islands-Rural Coastal Network

This was a big year for strengthening connections between our rural island and coastal communities. Through action-oriented, member-driven programs, we were able to leverage those new and stronger connections in order to build waves of support for rural island policy initiatives:

  • Connection Cafes: Virtual social meet-ups in June & November opened up the Resolutions process to the entire island and coastal community

  • Resolution Working Groups: Throughout the summer and fall, volunteer members of RIEP's Resolution Working Groups have begun meeting to create action plans in support of the 2023 Forum Resolutions. Working Groups will continue to meet throughout 2024.

Cultivating Rural Islands & Rural Coastal Community Partnerships

Recognizing RIEP's alignment of common needs and shared goals with BC's rural-remote coastal communities, RIEP members voted, during the November 2023 RIEP AGM, to update the Society's Constitution to reflect this new mandate.

Now, Chemainus, Port McNeill, Sayward, Powell River, and Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations are just a few of the many rural - remote coastal communities that can share in and contribute to the creation of business and community partnerships that are so critical to building rural-coastal resilience.
