April 2026 Volunteer Newsletter

Dear Volunteers and Friends,

April is National Volunteer Month, and we want to start by saying something simple but deeply true: our work would not be possible without you.

At Dorothy Day House, volunteers are not an “extra”—you are essential. You create stability for families in transition, bring warmth into our homes, and help make what could be a temporary shelter feel like a place of dignity, care, and community. Whether you’ve given your time once or continue to show up again and again, you are part of the reason families are able to stay together and move forward.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Month, we are reminded that this work is truly a collective effort. Thank you for showing up, for caring deeply, and for being part of this community.

With gratitude,

Dorothy Day House Team

💛 Volunteer Appreciation: Volunteers of the Year

At Dinner with Dorothy, we were proud to honor our 2026 Volunteers of the Year, Miriam and Amanda. Throughout the year, they generously bake and deliver birthday cakes for the families staying at Dorothy Day House, helping ensure that every child and parent has the chance to feel celebrated on their special day. Their kindness and thoughtfulness turn simple moments into meaningful memories for our families. We are so grateful for volunteers like Miriam and Amanda, who bring such care and joy to our community.

☕ Featured Opportunity: Café du Memphis

As part of our 20th Anniversary celebration, Café du Memphis is happening Saturday, April 25 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM at St. Michael Catholic Church—and we’d love for you to be involved.

This annual brunch-style event brings the community together to support Dorothy Day House while enjoying New Orleans–inspired favorites like shrimp and grits.

🎟 Tickets:

Tickets are available now—invite friends, family, or colleagues to join and learn more about our mission.

🙋‍♀️ Volunteer Opportunities:

📚 Learn, Serve, Deliver Hope

We believe that service starts with understanding.

We offer engagement opportunities for all ages, from K–12 students to college groups, businesses, and community organizations. Whether you’re looking for a hands-on service project or a deeper learning experience, we can work with you to create something meaningful.

Groups can:

  • Schedule a tour of Dorothy Day House
  • Attend a mission presentation to learn about our work firsthand
  • Partner with us to design a service or donation project that meets real needs

Our goal is simple: learn, serve, and deliver hope—together.

🥪 Upcoming: Lunch & Learn

Want to get to know us better?

Join us for an upcoming Lunch & Learn on Thursday, April 9th, from 12 PM-1 PM—a casual, one-hour virtual session where you can learn more about our mission, programs, and impact.

It’s a great first step if you’re new, or a meaningful way to stay connected if you’ve been involved for years.
