Health and Wellness Corner

February is American Heart Month

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

To prevent heart disease and increase awareness of its effects,
Milwaukee Urban League Young Professionals is proudly participating in American Heart Month.

Each year, heart disease is responsible for 1 out of every 3 deaths in Wisconsin.

You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease.

To lower your risk:
  • Watch your weight.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
  • Get active and eat healthy.

(U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2018;  Wisconsin Department of Health Services, 2016)

Get Active!

Get active with us at our Strengthening Leaders Bootcamp with Ashton Crawley of Level Up Training on Wednesday February 21st at 6:30pm.

The bootcamp will be held at Varsity Theater on Marquette University's Campus 1326 W. Wisconsin Ave. Cost is $15. Email healthandwellness@tmulyp.org if you're interested!

Volunteer Opportunity: Do you believe in the power of financial literacy? Are you interested in getting into the classroom to work with local youth? Do you wish someone had taught you about money management when you were a teen? Every year, SecureFutures, formerly Make A Difference - Wisconsin, brings hundreds of volunteers into high school classrooms to lead our  proven Money Sense lessons on financial basics.  Since 2006, our programs have led to proven life-changing behaviors for 62,000 teens at more than 200 high schools and community sites.  SecureFutures is looking for volunteers for this school year and your life and professional experiences would be invaluable. Training, curriculum and materials will be provided!    If you would like to learn more about how to become a Money Sense volunteer, contact Rashidah Butler-Jackson, Money Sense Program Manager, at  rashidah@securefutures.org   or  414-273-8101 .

To sign up to participate please email:  communityservice@tmulyp.org
