Double Your Give To The Max Day Impact

Avenues' board of directors are matching pre-scheduled Give to the Max Day donations from Nov. 1 - Nov. 13. Your gift will be doubled, dollar for dollar, up to $4,500.

Our Give to the Max goal is to raise $30,000, the cost of providing onsite health care and mental health services at our shelter and transitional living programs. In Minnesota, 60% of youth experiencing homelessness report having a serious mental health program. Despite insurance status, youth can access our mental health team and nurse when they need it most and in house. One of the biggest barriers to youth receiving health and wellness support is transportation, which is why Avenues offers these services on site.

Poetry and Pajamas

This month staff and youth came together for a pajamas, poetry and pizza night at Minneapolis Avenues. Below is a poem written by a young woman living at Minneapolis Avenues. She performed the poem for staff and youth and asked if it could be shared with the wider community.

The Dark Girl

I love you for your brownness,

And the rounded darkness of your breasts,

I love you for the breaking sadness in your voice ,

And shadows where your wayward eyelids rest,

Something of old forgotten queens

Lurks in the little abandon of your walk

And something of the shackled slave

Sobs in the rhythm of your talk

Oh, little brown girl, born for sorrow's mate,

Keep all you have of queenliness

Forgetting that you once were slave

And let your full lips laugh at fate!

Drop In For LGBTQI+ Youth Reopens

Avenues reopened drop in hours for LGBTQI+ youth last month at Camden Avenues, our location in the Camden neighborhood of Minneapolis. Drop in is a warm, safe place for queer youth and their friends to hang out and receive resources. Youth can take snacks and bus tokens, and talk to a Youth Advocate and Engagement Specialist for resources and support.

Drop in is every Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Camden Avenues, located at 1200 37th Ave N, Minneapolis. The space is wheelchair accessible and is located off of Bus Route 5.

Let youth in our community know about drop in by downloading and sharing this flyer. This is a great resource for GSA groups, teachers social workers and local businesses to share with their community.

Impact Opportunity

Volunteer This Weekend

Make an impact this weekend by volunteering for Avenues on Sunday, Nov. 3 from 3 pm -5 pm. Volunteers will rake and help with yard work to help our North Minneapolis shelter get ready for winter. If you're able, please bring your own rake. This is a great opportunity for groups! Volunteers must be 21 years or older.
