Thank You for Caring for Our Region's Youth + Young Adults

To each of the 44 agency leaders who submitted project proposals designed to support youth and young adults in our region, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks for the time, energy, and passion you invested in your recent grant proposal.

Your commitment to supporting the well-being of youth and young adults in our region is both inspiring and deeply appreciated.

The proposals we received this cycle were truly stellar. The innovative ideas and dedication to making a positive impact on our community were evident in every submission. It’s clear that there is an abundance of talent and vision among the organizations working to uplift our young people, and we are honored to have the opportunity to learn about your work.

We wish our funding allocation allowed us the opportunity to fund all projects; however, the number of exceptional proposals we received far exceeded our funds to be awarded. This made our decision-making process incredibly difficult, and while we wish we could support every project, we regret that we are unable to do so at this time.

Please know that your efforts do not go unnoticed, and we encourage you to continue your important work. We value your partnership and hope to explore future opportunities to collaborate in our shared mission to improve the lives of youth and young adults in our community.

The Good News: To those organizations chosen to advance to Round 2, we look forward to getting to know you better and partnering with you to ensure our region's youth and young adults have access to what they need, not just to get by, but to thrive and, if we work hard and do this right, to create generational change.

Thank you all again for your dedication and for entrusting us with your ideas. We look forward to staying connected and wish you continued success.

Warm regards,

Lori Bailey

Partner Spotlight:

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Center

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty with Parenting Classes

With grant funds from Nantahala Health Foundation in 2021, Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care offered an earn-while-you-learn class called Bright Course in English and Spanish. The more classes clients attend, the more they earn for things like diapers, cribs, and strollers.

Rachel's* Story

“Ever since going to the Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Center, I've felt like, no matter what, at the end of the day, everything will be okay for me and my daughter. Everyone who works there is so kind and caring, warm and loving - the support I have received from this organization is phenomenal.

“Before I had my daughter, my living situation was always unstable, irregular, and volatile, whether I was at my boyfriend's house, my dad's, or at the REACH shelter. I just couldn't see how I was going to get my act together and get clean.

“No matter what kind of day I was having, my worries would vanish when I walked into the (pregnancy) center. I have learned so much from doing the BrightCourses. And Ms. Michelle always makes me feel better about my future when she explains the resources that are available.

“I learned so much from BrightCoures. I really liked the way the classes were structured. I'm a single parent because of the choices I've had to make my entire life. I am 55 days clean today, mainly because my daughter REALLY has changed the way I think about our future, hers and mine."
