Washington Street Vision

To everyone - residents, businesses, families, and dogs - who participated in Hello Washington Street during Public Design Week from June 5 - 12, 2018.
The planning team heard from over 400 people in-person during Public Design Week. Some people came to the Pop-Up Design studio for a few minutes while on their way to run errands, and other people came nearly every day to observe work-in-progress and provide detailed feedback. Online, the project Facebook page reached over 5,000 people during the week. Two surveys - one about Washington Street and the other about public spaces - have received nearly 800 and nearly 400 responses respectively.
Chili Cookoff + Wrap-Up Presentation
Russ Preston from Principle Group gave the Wrap-Up Presentation on June 12 following the Chili Cookoff. Thanks to Social Restaurant, Councilor Albright, and City Staff for providing chili!

Pop-Up Design Studio
1239 Washington Street was officially transformed into the Hello Washington Street Pop-Up Design studio for six days to develop the Washington Street Vision Plan. The studio was open to the public from 8:30am–9:00pm from June 7 - June 11 and from 8:30am-2:30pm on June 12.

Residents stopped by to participate in planning and zoning scenario activities, communicate "Big Ideas", and take part in focused dialogue around particular topics. Planners from Principle Group and the City of Newton worked together during the week-long event to engage with the public and develop the Washington Street Vision in accordance with community input. Videos of each topic session from the week are available on this page
What's Next?
While this week of intense planning work is over, the process of Hello Washington Street is really just beginning. As Mayor Fuller has implored many residents so far, please stay involved over the coming months as we continue to refine ideas and plans for Washington Street, West Newton, Newtonville, and areas heading towards Newton Corner.

In the coming days we will send out a survey about the draft Big Ideas. Stay tuned!

The planning team will continue to communicate online - sign up for occasional email updates at www.newtonma.gov/washingtonstreetvision and follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/hellowashingtonstreet.

In fall 2018, the planning team will host public events for Hello Washington Street as the project progresses to a draft vision plan and draft zoning recommendations.
