Volunteer Appreciation Week

Thank You to our Volunteers!

“With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

We are so grateful to our dedicated volunteers who have continued to support Easterseals DuPage & Fox Valley. Over the past year we have seen a return of administrative, maintenance and event volunteers, along with corporate volunteers to help with summer landscaping at our Villa Park Center. We especially recognize:

Our Board of Directors, a group of prestigious community and business leaders that are committed to ensuring that children with disabilities and their families are empowered. Their leadership and participation has been so valuable during the pandemic. We thank them for their time and dedication.

There is never a better time to reach out to each of you to tell you “Thank You”. Without your generous support, we would not be able to fulfill our mission. By giving so generously of your time, you are helping children with developmental delays and disabilities achieve their goals. Please know how grateful we are for your commitment to the children we serve and to our organization. Again, Thank you!

Therapy Spotlight: Supporting a Family's Autism Journey

Zack is a four-year-old boy who loves going for walks, swimming, swinging at the playground and lighting up a room with his smile and contagious laugh. Zack was also born with a rare arteriovenous malformation in his brain called Vein of Galen Malformation (VOGM). At 18-months further testing revealed the vein had closed off and medically Zack was ok. However, VOGM also caused developmental delays which became noticeable. Zack's mom, Erin, shared "Zack did not walk until he was 22- months-old and his speech was months behind compared to his peers."

After Zack received early intervention services he started at Easterseals DuPage & Fox Valley. During this transition period, Erin shared, "We realized that more might be going on with Zack because he regressed in his speech, he began stimming often and he had trouble initiating and maintaining eye contact" Zack was evaluated at Easterseals Medical Diagnostic Clinic with Dr. Peter Smith and diagnosed with severe autism in July 2021.

Zack's new diagnosis brought clarity to the situation and helped ensure he received the resources and support he needed to flourish. Since Zack started his journey at Easterseals Erin has noticed real progress. "Zack has made big growth in his OT skills over the last one-and-a-half years! His fine motor skills along with his gross motor skills have improved. He now climbs all over the place and gets into EVERYTHING when before, he was hesitant to try new things and take risks. He is doing much better with making eye contact and coming to adults for help when he needs something."

Erin further explained how integrated support from Easterseals staff has made therapy more enjoyable and promoted success. "Our Easterseals therapists have been the best! They care about him and celebrate when he makes progress. They provide suggestions on what we can do at home to help reinforce what is done at therapy."

"We have appreciated having Dr. Smith at Easterseals to provide Zack's initial autism diagnosis and to also check in with him and us every few months or so. His expertise on autism is evident and we take comfort in knowing that he is in our corner when it comes to parenting someone with autism."

In celebration of his 77th birthday, Alan Baer will be walking 77 miles over 7 days to support the Philly Baer Fund at Easterseals DuPage & Fox Valley. His walk kicks off this Saturday, April 23 and his fundraising effort has already surpassed his $7,777 goal!

The Philly Baer Foundation was established in memory of Alan’s grandson, Philly. Their objective is to improve the lives of children with special needs and their families by supporting medical research and providing access to healthcare and therapies. In 2020, the Foundation formed a partnership with Easterseals to create The Philly Baer Fund. This special fund provides financial assistance towards therapies for children with complex medical needs.

Thank you to the Philly Baer Foundation and the supporters who are helping to ensure children get the care they need! Show your support for Alan and join us in cheering him along next week.
