National Award winners were lauded during a virtual celebration December 5, which marks International Volunteer Day annually. Congratulations to the following Ontario award recipients
Elizabeth Giacinti - David Ornstein Distinguished Service Award
In addition to being a dialysis nurse for nearly 20 years, Elizabeth has been a dedicated leadership volunteer for The Kidney Foundation. Leading the board in Brantford, Elizabeth has championed events, meetings, mailings, and fundraising efforts, including the annual Kidney Walk. Her patients love her and other volunteers are inspired by her. The organization of a yearly Christmas party for dialysis patients and their families is a welcome event. She thinks of every detail and her dedication, hard work and care shines through in all she does.
David Ayres - The Kidney Foundation of Canada National Fund Development Award
At a time of urgent need, David Ayres was the driving force behind a nation-wide fundraising campaign in April 2020. Triggered by the onset of COVID-19, the Foundation established the David Ayres Emergency Fund campaign, raising in excess of $100,000 to support patient needs. As a kidney transplant recipient who had just been in the media spotlight for his hockey skills, David stepped up by shooting videos and participating in numerous media interviews to explain the challenges facing patients and families. His efforts were met with an outpouring of support across Canada and helped the Foundation meet immediate needs resulting from the pandemic.
Greg Robbins - Harold W. Ashenmil Award
Greg’s dedication and commitment to the Kidney Foundation is nothing short of remarkable. Since the 1970s, he has been a volunteer at the chapter, Branch and National levels across three provinces.
Greg’s connection with kidney disease and his involvement with The Kidney Foundation began at the same time, when his wife started hemodialysis. He was at her side throughout her 32-year journey with home hemodialysis, two failed transplant attempts, and finally a successful kidney transplant from Greg.
Under his leadership, the Kidney Foundation deployed its first Canada-wide Strategic Framework and fostered increased collaboration across the Foundation. And he is always ready to roll up his sleeves to participate in walks and special events.
