Teachers are Amazing!

#GivingTuesdayNow
Today marks Teacher Appreciation Day! We are more thankful than ever for teachers as they are accomplishing unprecedented feats! LaGuardia's teachers have been teaching remotely and continue to encourage LaGuardia students to be creative and find their artistic voices. And we know first hand that t he arts have the power to heal.

Whether you graduated from LaGuardia, or the High Schools of Music and Art or Performing Arts, I'll bet there are many teachers who left indelible marks on your lives. We hope that you take a couple of minutes today to think about a teacher who made a positive impact, and we'd love to hear about it! Fill out our "thankful form" and share a memory of a teacher or simply share why you are thankful to have received an unrivaled free arts education: alumniandfriends.org/thankful
Ellie Sonu (LaG '22) shares her art and says, "I’m thankful that I get to have a high quality education for free. I wouldn’t have made it this far on my own and I have LaGuardia to help me become an artist in the future."
Today we are joining in the #GivingTuesdayNow campaign, where the "ultimate goal is to create a more just and generous world, one where generosity is at the heart of the society we build together, unlocking dignity, opportunity, and equity around the globe."

We understand that everyone's circumstances are different at this time. If you are in a position to do so, please consider a small tax deductible donation in honor or memory of a teacher, or in honor of today's LaGuardia teachers who are making the best of an incredibly difficult situation. No contribution is too small as budgetary gaps in public school arts funding will inevitably be widening in the years to come.
Your tax deductible contribution to Alumni & Friends supports the arts education at LaGuardia, and helps our students and teachers by providing:
  • equipment and supplies for each of LaGuardia’s six studio departments – art, dance, drama, instrumental music, technical theater, and vocal music

  • accompanists for the dance, drama, and music departments, and master classes taught by industry professionals

  • art supplies and live models for the art department

  • instrument repair and tuning over 40 pianos in the school

  •  annual awards to over 200 students – many in honor of specific classes, esteemed alumni, & beloved teachers

  • scholarships for students with financial need to attend summer arts programs and receive private lessons

  • emergency funding for students with financial need to cover senior dues

  • and so much more!

Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia was the mayor of New York City during the Great Depression and World War II, and in those dark days he believed in the power of the arts so strongly that he created a public high school that championed the arts and encouraged young people to pursue their creative endeavors. As our school faces incredible challenges ahead, it is our community of alumni, families, and friends that can help make up some of the drastic cuts to public funding LaGuardia will face due to COVID-19.

Together we will get through this, and together we will be stronger!
Alumni & Friends is doing what we can to share some artistic and creative outlets through our website (   alumniandfriends.org   ) and  facebook page ( facebook.com/alumniandfriends ) , and we invite you to share how you are staying creative, or to share something inspirational with our community. W hether it is a link to your website, artwork, books, podcasts, videos, performances, we want to highlight the spirit of this creative and resilient Music & Art, Performing Arts, and LaGuardia community. C lick here   to share your projects:

Take good care of yourself and your loved ones, and please stay in touch!

All the best from the Alumni & Friends team,

Zoe (LaG '89), Leigh (LaG '89), and Robindra
