Old Schoolhouse Museum Christmas Display
Holiday touches can be found throughout the Old Schoolhouse Museum, 6760 National Park Drive in Twentynine Palms, through New Year's. Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. (Twentynine Palms Historical Society photo by Kelly O'Sullivan)
The Twentynine Palms Historical Society invites visitors to ring in the season by checking out the annual holiday display the Old Schoolhouse Museum.
The display designed by Marilyn Fernald is built on the theme of "music" and features an antique radio donated by Mickey McGrorty of McGee's Auto Body, a replica of a phonograph donated many years ago by the late Dr. Walter B. Crowl, the community's first veterinarian, a guitar donated by Fernald's daughter, Dana Bowden, and a host of old Christmas records.
A tiny smoke tree decorated with spiced gumdrops offers a whimsical nod to how early desert dwellers decorated for the holidays.
"There wasn't always a way to get a green tree out here," Fernald said.
The tree also is a nod to the late Don Malone, the beloved Twentynine Palms High School art teacher and longtime historical society member, who would decorate a tree with the popular candy for the society's annual display each year, Bowden said.
The museum, 6760 National Park Drive across from the 29 Palms Inn, is open from 1-4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
Admission is free, but donations are welcome, and visitors are encouraged to stop in the gift shop, which is packed with treasures for everyone on their holiday list.

What is Sanctuary?
Sanctuary is a collaborative public art project funded in part by the California Arts Council's Veterans Initiative in the Arts Grant. Mil-Tree's Sanctuary partners include San Bernardino Art Connection, Joshua Tree Music Festival, Joshua Tree Lake RV and Campground, and Copper Mountain College. The project consists of a number of art workshops open to veterans, active military and their families, and the community at large to participate with the building of a new gathering space at the Joshua Tree Lake RV and Campground (home of the biannual Joshua Tree Music Festival). This community gathering space will be available to be used for all kinds of events including speak outs, meetings, celebrations, reading, marriages, meditation, lectures, and more!
The Sanctuary project has three major components: ceramic workshops with artists Brian Bosworth at Copper Mountain College. mixed-media metal workshop with local artist Bobby Furst in his Joshua Tree studio, and earthbag construction workshops building with James Golub and Fox McBride on-site at Joshua Tree Lake. The earthbag construction uses the familiar tools of war in a new, environmentally friendly's capacity as the literal ground beneath our feet creates the structure formation.
The art created during the ceramic and mixed-media workshops, along with personal artifacts participants wish to include, will be inlaid in the Sanctuary walls. A metalwork sculpture will serve as a podium area for speakers and leaders when needed. In the end, our labor will come together as a beautiful meeting ground and the art creation process will be rich with personal stories.
Why do we need your help?
The Veterans Initiative in the Arts grant graciously awarded by the California Arts Council to create Sanctuary is a matching grant. Essentially, this means they have designated funds for us, but we as a community are expected to meet the same level of commitment in order to fulfill the project's need.
The donations to the project will not go towards anyone or anything's financial gain, but directly to the creation of the Sanctuary. Mil-Tree presents all workshops free of charge to broaden our outreach and audience and make it possible for everyone to attend. The project also demands physical labor and lots of handiwork. Mil-Tree truly believes that digging in and working with your hands and creating something concrete, especially alongside friends, can heal the soul.
Your donations will be used specifically to purchase art and building materials for this collaborative and community-based art project and a percentage of the funds raised will help defray the cost of liability insurance mandated by the state of California for the safety of the participants and will keep Mil-Tree thriving and growing!

"Winter Blues: Desert Moods and Shades" is the theme for the winter Art in Public Places exhibition at Twentynine Palms Visitor Center & Gallery and Chamber of Commerce, 73484 29 Palms Hwy., downtown Twentynine Palms. - Raising funds to attend a conference in Orlando, Florida
- Date of trip: April 19-23, 2017
- Participants: 27 students, 5 adults (Music director & chaperones)
- How we were invited: Choirs of America, the organization that invited us to Carnegie Hall 3 years ago based on our performance at a competition attended by their scouts, is offering us the opportunity to attend this conference with world-renowned clinicians and composers of the same caliber that we worked with at Carnegie Hall.
WHAT WE NEED
- Cost: approximately $45,000 due by January 31, 2017
- Cost covers: transportation, room and board, conference registration (if we are able to raise enough money, we will also visit some cultural venues so we will need to pay entrance fees for those)
WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR
- Fundraiser: We are doing a 5-hour radio-thon on Z107.7 on January 21, 2017 and we need sponsors.
- What your donation entitles you to:
- o$5,000 - Your company will be recognized throughout the entire 5-hour program as the sponsor of the "Send Our Kids to Orlando" radio-thon.
- o$1,000 - Your company will be announced as a major sponsor at the top of the hour and will also be advertised leading into and exiting every musical set during that hour. That's a minimum of 10 advertising spots.
- o$500 - You will spend an hour on the air with the regular DJ, conversing between musical sets and reading advertising copy leading into and exiting each musical set.
- o$50 - one advertising spot during the radio-thon
- We will assist you in writing your advertising copy if you so desire. If you have an existing ad with Z107.7, you can choose to use that.
- Why does the ad cost more than the usual price? As with all fundraisers, the additional amount is a donation to the group doing the fundraising. The TPHS Select Choir will receive 100% of your donation.

Reach Out Morongo Basin
Reach Out Morongo Basin officials have begun gathering homes and sponsors for the 13th Annual Parade of Homes, set to take place Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017. The annual event, which sees Reach Out Morongo Basin supporters from across the basin open their homes to curious visitors, is the Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors program's long running fundraiser bringing in thousands of dollars in ticket sales and sponsorships every year to support it's services to senior and disabled residents of the Morongo Basin.
"The generosity of owners who open their homes to us is what makes this event such a success" said Executive Director Robin Schlosser who continued "Growing interest and success in the recent past has homeowners eager to show their homes which range from renovated homestead cabins to astonishing architectural masterpieces. The unique qualities of each home showcase our desert community and way of life. Visitors on the tour view six homes in the Morongo Basin each with its own story."
Homeowners are urged to call Reach Out at 760-361-1410 for information or to volunteer their homes.
In addition organizers are looking for tour and media sponsors at the following levels:
- Platinum: $1,000 or more
- The single platinum sponsor will receive top billing in all publicity about the home tour as well as listing on tickets, directional signs, advertising, fliers and posters and the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and newsletter. The platinum sponsor also has the option of nominating one home for the tour, with the caveat that the home should be of historical or architectural interest and that the chairman reserves the right to choose homes for the tour. Docents at each home will wear company shirts and hats, assuming they are supplied by the sponsor and will display company brochures during parade hours. The platinum sponsor will receive 20 free tickets.
- Gold: $500 or more
- Each gold sponsor will also be the floral centerpiece sponsor for one home on the tour, with their name featured prominently in the display. Gold sponsors will also be listed in advertising, fliers, posters and on the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and newsletter and will receive eight free tickets.
- Silver: $250 or more
- Silver sponsors will be listed in advertising, on fliers and posters and on the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and newsletter. They will receive four free tickets.

Copper Mountain College is proud to announce its Kickoff Booster Campaign to recruit 100 Charter Members of the CMC Athletic Booster Club. Charter membership is $500 and would bestow "Lifetime Membership" in the CMC Athletic Booster Club. You will be an initial supporter of the development of an athletic program at our community college. The club and its new members will be honored at a private party in January 2017. A packed house of Community leaders and Theatre supporters from throughout the Morongo Basin and beyond filled the Friendship Hall at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center last Thursday, September 15, as the three Morongo Basin Chambers of Commerce joined Theatre 29 volunteers to reveal the exciting 2017 "Season of Magic" theatrical season.
Theatre 29 Board President Gary Daigneault opened the event by welcoming the overflow crowd to the 8th annual event with a brief look at the remarkable history, ongoing growth, and unquestioning community support for the all-volunteer Community Theatre organization since its inception in 1999.
For 2017, Theatre 29 will present five Main Stage productions, a Halloween Haunt, a Summer Youth Theater Program, and an exclusive two-week run of a special theatrical event. In addition, new for 2017, Theatre 29 will introduce an Improvisational Theatre troupe under the direction of Chris Fleischman
Starting with the 2017 Season, Musicals will run 12 performances over a 4 week run (three performances, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday each weekend) with allowance to extend the run another weekend. Non-Musicals will run 9 performances in a 3 week run, also Friday, Saturday evenings, and Sunday matinees. Each show will run Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 pm and Sunday at 2:30 pm. All shows are produced at the Theatre 29 building at 73637 Sullivan Road in the City of Twentynine Palms.
Daigneault explained that the Theatre 29 Board had looked carefully at what offerings were bringing in the biggest audiences, as a way to gauge what the community wants from its local theatre.
Citing the spectacular success of last year's "Disney's Little Mermaid" which sold out all performances before it even opened and then sold out two additional shows in an hour, he said it was clear that family-oriented productions were what the public wanted to see.
In keeping with the family-oriented theme, the seven Directors for the season took the podium, and with humor, snippets of shows and outstanding vocal performances, they introduced the "Season of Magic" themed 2017 season.
The season will start with Sylvia January 13th through 29th. Eddie Tucker will direct this hilarious comedy. "Sylvia is what happens when a smart and sassy canine meets a man in Central Park and changes his life," Tucker said.
The second show for the season is Mary Poppins March 3rd through 26th. Daigneault as artistic director and Bill Barrett as music director will team up to direct this hit Broadway musical based on the Disney classic.
Next up, the popular Broadway musical Into the Woods will be helmed by artistic director Charles Harvey and musical director Kathryn Ferguson. With a classic story that darkly twists and turns through the worlds of favorite Fairy tales and Children's literature. Into the Woods will run April 21st through May 14th.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber operetta, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat running August 25th through September 17th will bring the St. Joseph's Players of Yucca Valley's artistic director Rebecca Havely along with musical director Analisa Pilecki to Theatre 29.
The very popular season themed Halloween Haunt will continue with Freak Show for October 19th through 31st. Producer Brandon Hazel said the walk-through attraction will be both frightening and disturbing and definitely not for younger children.
The 2017 "Season of Magic" will conclude with the Broadway Classic Meet Me in St. Louis November 24th through December 17th. Multi-award winner Kathryn Ferguson will direct this Broadway musical based on the 1944 film about a family living in St. Louis, Missouri, in the beginning of the 20th century. The film debuted "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," now a classic carol.
Theatre 29 will also host a two-week special offering of Rashomon, an adaptation of an Akira Kurosawa film about contradictory versions of an assault and murder in Japan. It will be directed by Abe Daniels, an award winning director/actor from both Grove's Cabin Theatre and the St. Joseph's Players. The play will run June 16th through 25th.
In addition to the regular season offerings, Theatre 29 will also hold a Summer Youth Theater program June 26th to July 30th. Last year the program saw 64 area children from 7-17 participate.
