Dear Neighbor,
Yesterday I was elected to represent Virginia's 11th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. I'm deeply honored and humbled by the trust that voters have placed in me. While I'm excited to be taking on this new role and challenge, it does mean that I will have to give up a job that I love — serving as your Braddock District Supervisor.
Because I expect to be sworn in to the House of Representatives immediately, I have submitted my resignation to the Clerk to the Board of Supervisors effective at 9:00 AM today, September 10. Moving forward, the Board of Supervisors will request that the Fairfax Circuit Court establish a date for a special election to fill the vacancy created by my resignation.
While my resignation will create a temporary vacancy on the Board of Supervisors, residents of the Braddock District will continue to be ably represented by Chairman McKay. Additionally, the Braddock District Office and staff will remain in place under the direction of County Executive Bryan Hill and will continue working on your behalf to solve problems and answer questions. As always, you can reach them at braddock@fairfaxcounty.gov or (703) 425-9300.
Serving on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has been a distinct honor, and representing you in the Braddock District has been an absolute privilege. Together, we confronted a global pandemic and emerged stronger. We’ve made incredible progress toward our affordable housing goals, diversified our economy, protected our local environment, and maintained both our AAA bond rating and status as the safest large jurisdiction in the United States.
In the Braddock District, we’ve delivered hundreds of new affordable homes, secured funding to renovate the Audrey Moore Rec Center, improved the design and won state funding for the Braddock Road Improvement Project, and put Lake Accotink on the path to long-term sustainability.
Along the way, our office helped thousands of constituents and dozens of neighborhoods solve problems and build stronger communities. None of this would have been possible without the support of the dedicated, hardworking Braddock District staff who have consistently met and exceeded my standards for responsiveness, problem-solving, and professionalism. Nor would my work have been possible without the support of my amazing wife, Yvette, and our son, Mateo, who have shared in the sacrifices of public service and reminded me every day why this work matters.
I have profound respect and admiration for my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors, Fairfax County's Senior Management Team, and the hardworking County staff, all of whom give of themselves to serve our community. As a member of Congress, I will continue working alongside them and you to confront the challenges we face.
But I'm most grateful to you — my constituents. One of the many things I learned from the late Congressman Connolly is that serving in local government is a special and unique opportunity. You welcomed me into your neighborhoods and your living rooms, to HOA meetings, ice cream socials, and community clean-ups. We've celebrated together, mourned together, and worked together, even when we didn't fully agree. My goal has been to go about the work in a way that builds trust by being transparent, accessible, and responsive. I hope we've succeeded.
Though I'm sad to leave the Board of Supervisors and my role as the Braddock District Supervisor, I'm excited to continue representing most of you in Congress. Moving forward, you will be able to reach me at the following offices:
