This week's LPN Networking Mixer was a great success, made possible by the strong support of our community. We are grateful to everyone who joined us to spend the evening together in support of the Lawrence Partnership and to celebrate George Ramirez’s impactful tenure leading the organization.

The event also marked a new chapter as Dr. Naydeen González-De Jesús began her role as Interim Executive Director. Looking ahead, the Partnership remains firmly committed to advancing its mission through collaboration and strengthening opportunities for the Lawrence community.

Thank you to BrightBridge Credit Union for generously sponsoring this event. And thank you to board member, Walkiria Manzueta and the Cafeteria Food Hall, for hosting us.

We're looking forward to what's next for the Lawrence Partnership and the LPN.

Lawrence, Andover, North Andover Schools Receive Early Literacy Tutoring Grant Money

Several Essex County school districts, including Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover, will benefit from a $10 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education to expand high-dosage early literacy tutoring during the 2026–27 school year.

The grant supports the Healey-Driscoll administration’s literacy strategy and complements $25 million in state funding for no-cost tutoring in 272 elementary schools. High-dosage tutoring has proven effective in improving reading outcomes, especially for students below grade level.

The funding also aligns with the state’s Literacy Launch initiative, backed by $35 million in state funding, which focuses on strengthening early literacy from early childhood through third grade through educator training, instructional materials, and evidence-based practices.

ADA Grant Will Improve Accessibility at Lawrence Public Library

The Lawrence Public Library has been awarded a $232,000 state ADA grant to enhance accessibility for patrons with disabilities, supporting the city’s efforts to make library facilities and services more inclusive and user-friendly. The funding, provided through the Massachusetts Office on Disability, will be used to install key accessibility features—such as automatic door openers, updated signage, and other improvements—to ensure that individuals with mobility and sensory challenges can fully access the library’s programs and spaces.

Library and city officials say these upgrades will expand equitable access to resources and strengthen the library’s role as a welcoming community hub, particularly for seniors and residents with disabilities. The grant reflects broader municipal and statewide commitments to ADA compliance and inclusive public services, helping ensure that all Lawrence residents can benefit from the library’s offerings.

MEVA Fare-Free System Is Resounding Success

The Merrimack Valley Regional Transit System’s fare-free bus program, launched as a pilot in 2022, has become a permanent and highly successful service. The program provides free transportation to key hubs in Lawrence, Haverhill, and Methuen, and has resulted in tripled ridership since fares were eliminated.

According to MEVA Transit Administrator Noah Berger, customer satisfaction is at a record high, with 86% of riders reporting they are satisfied or extremely satisfied with the service. The fare-free routes are heavily used for access to hospitals, clinics, and schools, helping residents reach essential services and improving overall community health.

Funded primarily through the Massachusetts “Millionaires Tax,” the program has been widely praised by riders for easing financial burdens and expanding access to reliable transportation across the Merrimack Valley.
