Dear Friends,
2025 has been a year like no other in memory. It’s been a year of horror, violence and division for so many, with the promise of more to come. Everywhere we look, we see anger and pain and fear. In this time, as always, we must each ask: What is ours to do? How can we best contribute to the world? The need to “do something” weighs on us.
About 14 years ago, E prayed—not for the first time—What is mine to do? She heard, Gather a community and pray. The Companions originated in prayers of longing and discernment. We found our longing to know and love God more deeply, and our longing to be a healing presence for others. We found our community’s name through prayer.
Meeting God in words and silence, we pray, chant, praise and lament. We ask God to show us what we need to know and what to do. Through centering prayer, we open ourselves to listen for what God might be saying. We become grounded in love. This makes us more resilient, and more alert to the needs of others. Through prayer we grow in compassion and in vision. We pray alone and together, offering prayers for this aching, wounded and glorious world, its creatures, and its people, and we give thanks. Yes, we pray for ourselves, and we pray to be of service. It is a life of great blessing and challenge.
Our mission, to proclaim the renewing and transforming power of encountering Christ, emerged through prayer. While we do this in a number of ways, prayer is central to them all. People tell us it makes a real difference for them to know we are praying for them.
An anonymous proverb tells us, better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. We believe this. We’ve staked our lives on it. We get discouraged and afraid too, but we take our concerns to God in prayer. There we hear the voice of hope, the voice of love. New possibilities, new life, grow out of our prayer. We light our candles, hold them high to kindle a fire, and encourage others to light theirs.
We need your support to do this. Prayer enriches our lives and the world, but it does not pay our bills! We are strengthened by your love and encouragement. You remind us that what we do matters for the world. We need your financial support, and your prayers. However you pray, you too are a channel of God’s love.
You can donate through our website (below), or through PayPal, or even through the mail!
May God bless you and keep you, and may you know what is yours to do. Together, we can be the light we so desperately need.
Yours in Christ,
The Companions
