Member Feature #2:
Franklin Udeh

Since joining this past summer, Franklin Udeh has been a key part of Turn it Around. He is also a valuable member of the Charlestown High School Varsity Basketball team. Franklin stood out so much that he was named to the Boston Public Schools "All Star" list for the city-wide Scholar Athletes program. Franklin was also part of the winning team for the 14 - 18 year olds at last Saturday's 3-on-3 Turn it Around Basketball Tournament.

Turn it Around 3-on-3
Basketball Tournament 2017
Turn it Around host ed its 3rd annual 3-on-3 B asketball Tournament on Saturday April 8th. Seventy Charlestown residents between the ages of 9 and 18 came ou t to the Community Center for the full day of games.

At the 9 - 13 year old games in the morning and the 14 - 18 year old competitions in the afternoon,  players demonstrated an incredible amount of talent and sportsmanship.

Players and members of the community also joined for a pre-tournament pasta dinner at the YMCA on Friday April 7th. The dinner was generously prepared and served by First Church C harlestown.

During the pasta dinner, players heard the powerful stories of two individuals who lives have been influenced by community violence--Jose Tevenal (Tev) and Charlestown resident, Suzy Rawlinson.

After they shared their answers for the question of "how do we make Charlestown inclusive, safe, and healthy for everyone who lives, works, plays, and studies here?" on on our "We Are ALL Charlestown banner."

The thoughtful and creative answers include "I want less racism and more equality in Charlestown," "have programs to help kids handle depression," "have more activities to keep kids off the street," and "to be kind to people and to have a strong community."

UNH or the "yellow team" took the  Championship sweatshirts home for the morning games. This talented team included Hayden Groh, Quentin Dunlin, Caiden Collier, and Josh Pina.

The Knicks or "medium blue" team won the afternoon games. Players include Turn it Aroun d member, Franklin Udeh, Ryan Yandle, Justin Alvelo, and Noah Shiner.

Straight Outta Charlestown:
Turn it Around Youth of the Month!
April's Turn it Around Youth of the Month is Zaire Richardson. Since joining Turn It Around this past September, Zaire has brought a contagious energy and spirit to our group. She is always one of the first to volunteer during our weekly groups through her willingness to take risks and be vulnerable, and she encourages others to do the same. This month, Zaire joined in presenting to the youth center in Newtown about our group and encouraging youth to come out for our 3rd annual basketball tournament. She rallied her friends to perform a cheering half time performance at the tournament and was the very first group member to win in our name contest of all 40 youth members!

-Sarah Coughlin, Coalition Director

Let's hear from Zaire herself!

My name is Zaire Richardson. I am 16 years old and I am from Charlestown. I also attend Charlestown High School, where I was first introduced to Turn it Around.

Turn it Around is a significant asset to my life  because of my long term goal of becoming a psychologist. The reason I say this is because Turn It Around teaches me various life skills that better prepare me for my future
(the real world).

This includes offering guidance, increasing patience, making healthy life choices, and so on. By  furthering my bond with Turn It  Around, I know it can only become a positive aspect of my life.
