Thankful For So Much
Every November I take the opportunity to remember what I am grateful for as the year ends. This year, as always, I am finding more blessings than I can list in a newsletter, so here is my shortlist for 2022.
My husband. I have such a wonderful life partner and some public acknowledgment of all he does is in order. Thank you, Joe!
Our team at The Center. Always willing to stretch, take care of each other AND can achieve anything. You guys are the best!
New funding sources. This year the Johnson & Johnson Foundation and Janssen took a leap of faith to support our Grow Your Own APRN workforce initiative. The unending support for nurses they provide is extraordinary.
Our furry best friends. I am a dog person…and could be a crazy dog lady if my family allowed it, but really, pets are the best!
Midterm elections are over. At least for the most part, and in the end those who lost shook hands and congratulated others on a race well run. I appreciate the show of character.
All-wheel drive vehicles. Mountain driving in Colorado during winter can be hazardous and I often find myself glad to have all wheel drive!
Sunshine! The sun shines in Colorado 300 days a year. I grew up in the Midwest where winter can be gray, so when I look outside and so often see the sunshine, I am grateful.
Leadership Diversity Conference! This year we combined our Leadership and Diversity conferences into a single day event. We had 184 participants, and the day was filled with great energy! Thank you to our team who planned it and those who attended! It was wonderful!
Dr. Rosario Medina and Dr. Tammy Spencer. Rosario was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing this year and Tammy was named the NLN Nurse Educator of the Year! Both work at CU and Colorado is lucky to have these wonderful educators and The Center is lucky to have them as partners.
Nurses! Colorado nurses and across the country continue to amaze and inspire me as I watch their work, learn of their efforts, and see the patient outcomes that are driven by great nursing care. Thank you all for your incredible work, talent, and expertise!
As always, I am so proud to be a nurse. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Be well and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Scholarship for Nursing
Pathways to Practice
We are excited to announce our new Scholarships for Nursing Pathways to Practice. As Colorado’s only nursing focused healthcare workforce center our focus now, along with the rest of the country, is to help increase the number of nurses serving our communities. As a non-profit we need many resources to support our efforts. This is where you come in. We invite you to partner with us to help create a scholarship fund aimed at building our state’s nursing workforce.

Kathleen McInnis RN, MS - 2022 Nightingale
At our October all-staff meeting we took time to celebrate our very own Kathleen McInnis. Kathleen received the Nightingale award for advocacy in administration, education, research, and/or nontraditional nursing practice. Below is an overview of her project.
When hospitals closed to students due to the pandemic in 2020, refresher course participants (experienced nurses seeking to return to the workforce) were left out of the Governor's emergency orders allowing for student nurses to complete 100% of their clinical hours through a simulated clinical experience. After months of advocacy, data collection, presentations, and meeting attendance, the Colorado State Board of Nursing voted in October 2021 to allow nurses with inactive licenses the option to demonstrate competency and complete the requisite 120 clinical hours through up to 100% simulated clinicals. This decision has allowed Colorado to be a state leader in improving and expanding clinical education for previously licensed nurses that will transform the way nurses can re-enter the workforce, while helping to remove barriers for rural and disadvantaged nurses.
