November 2024 Newsletter

A Message from our Executive Director

It is with a heavy heart that I begin this newsletter by addressing the Mountain Fire. Many long-time residents of Ventura County are reminded of past devastating fires, such as the Thomas and Woolsey Fires. The Mountain Fire, which ignited on Wednesday morning, rapidly spread due to the fierce Santa Ana Winds, forcing first responders to prioritize evacuations and saving lives. The destruction left in its wake is significant, and our community has faced an incredibly tough week.

However, even in the face of such tragedy, I am encouraged by the immense outpouring of support. Residents across Ventura County have shown an extraordinary willingness to step up and help their neighbors. Many of our partners in neighboring counties have reached out, offering assistance and solidarity. And most importantly, the bravery and tireless dedication of our firefighters have prevented this fire from taking a single life and inflicting even more extensive damage.

I want to provide a brief update as to how VRFSC has been responding to the Mountain Fire. Our role during this event has been to share information, direct inquiries to appropriate resources, support and partner with local recovery groups, and prepare other communities to be ready for any other fire that might occur. Although VRFSC’s mission is rooted in preparedness rather than direct response, we have been doing our part to assist in the beginning stages of recovery.  Please visit venturacountyrecovers.org for more information related to the Mountain Fire.

Lastly, many of you have likely seen our recent emails and reminders about our Annual Event. I understand it may feel inappropriate for our organization to move forward with this event on November 14th in light of the recent tragedy. However, we believe that now, more than ever, it is essential for us to come together, acknowledge the positive work being done in our communities, and reaffirm our commitment to helping Ventura County prepare for wildfires. Please consider attending to learn more about ongoing efforts and how you can contribute.

If you are approached by or know residents, friends, families who are impacted by the Mountain Fire, please direct them to fill out this Impacted Households Needs Assessment form.

Thank you for your continued support,
