Honoring our veterans

In Precinct 2, every day is a day to honor and support our veterans. Every day at our VV Ramsey Veterans Center we assist our heroes and their families with healthcare, transportation, pensions, compensation filings, death pension claims, and more. Our veterans services team, most of whom are veterans themselves, are dedicated to helping fellow veterans and their families feel welcomed and cared for.

Every November we join our nation in commemorating Veterans Day. From honoring our Precinct 2 at our annual Veterans Day Luncheon to waving our nation's flag with reverence at the Veterans Day Parade in downtown Houston, we are grateful to mark this special day with you.

Prioritizing public safety:

Reducing recidivism through literacy

On November 1, Commissioner Garcia and Sheriff Ed Gonzalez teamed up to drop off 1,000 books at the Women’s Empowerment Center. This effort was made possible through community donations and expanded the library collection available to the inmates. The Women's Empowerment Center was established in 2023 with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. It works to reduce recidivism by providing counseling services, educational resources, and skill-building opportunities. Click here to read about the program's impact.

Maintaining our infrastructure:

Flood Control District Proposition A passes

Harris County voters approved a $100 million boost for flood control maintenance. This means a safer, more resilient Harris County for years to come.

"I’m deeply grateful to the Harris County voters for their overwhelming approval of the Harris County Flood Control District maintenance proposition. This helps to affirm public confidence that the district is moving in the right direction. With the voters approval of Prop A, we will be able to begin to address the neglect our system has endured for years.

It will bring us closer to removing Houston/Harris County from the national spotlight as the most flood prone region in the country." -Commissioner Adrian Garcia

Q: What or who inspires you to dedicate your career to serving your community?

In the last month, Commissioner Garcia led or voted in favor of the following items:

Funding for non-profits: Commissioner Garcia led the effort to allocate $20 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to help local nonprofits expand their services. This support will boost food distribution, housing, and healthcare including mental health care, and other essential services across the county.

Safer communities: Commissioner Garcia and the Commissioners Court approved a Fire Code update for unincorporated areas, effective January 2025. The new measures include the most up-to-date standards and best practices for keeping students in schools and seniors in nursing homes safe from carbon monoxide.

Resolution

We proudly recognize Precinct 2's Public Works team for their extraordinary achievement in completing over 5 million linear feet of ditching ahead of schedule! They surpassed the seven-year timeline set by Commissioner Garcia. Their hard work and dedication —often working around the clock—are invaluable in preventing flooding. We are deeply grateful for their efforts to keep our community safe.
