Paving Pathways to Homeownership

Message from Our Executive Director

This has been a challenging year for affordable housing and homeownership organizations, and for the many Washington households striving to find and maintain stability in an increasingly difficult economy. The work of expanding and preserving homeownership has never felt more urgent, or more complex.

These past weeks made that even clearer. Washingtonians statewide just endured a record-long federal government shutdown that put essential supports like SNAP food benefits, federal paychecks, and other critical services at risk. During this period, WHRC saw our website traffic nearly double—an unmistakable sign of how many households are searching for reliable resources to help prevent foreclosure and navigate financial uncertainty. At the same time, homebuyers continued reaching out to us, still determined to pursue the American dream while becoming increasingly unsure about whether it remains within reach.

And yet I have hope, stubbornly and truly, and not merely powered by my bottomless mug of Café Bustelo.

That hope comes from the WHRC team and from our statewide, cross-sector network of partners who continue to show up with determination, creativity, and a shared belief in what’s possible. Together, we are steadfast in our commitment to increasing access to homeownership, especially for those who have long been furthest from opportunity.

We do this work because we know the truth: generational wealth-building in America has never been equitably available. But we also know that when families can purchase, keep, and maintain their homes, it strengthens entire communities. It creates stability, builds health, and opens doors for future generations.

Thank you for standing with us, for supporting this mission, and for continuing to believe in a Washington where homeownership and generational wealth-building are attainable for all.

Measuring Our Impact

From hotline calls to web traffic, October brought a surge in activity and reflected the very real challenges many Washingtonians are facing. We heard from individuals seeking support with mortgage concerns, homebuying questions, and navigating difficult notices related to pre-foreclosure. For those experiencing default, loss of income was the most common root cause.

Here’s a snapshot of how we served Washingtonians:

Recent Wins & Highlights

Black Homeownership Spokane Fair

WHRC was proud to participate in the Black Homeownership Spokane event at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. Elizabeth led the workshop “You Got the Keys! Now What? Sustaining Homeownership in Challenging Times” and represented WHRC at our resource booth alongside her mom, Isabel Perez—her affordable homeownership hero and inspiration for this work.

We were also honored to sponsor the event’s lunch, as it was a truly inspiring day of learning, connection, and community celebration.

El Centro Gala

El Centro de la Raza’s Gala was a vibrant, joy-filled celebration of culture, community, and collective power. Evelin had the honor of attending alongside supporters, families, and leaders who gathered to recognize the transformative work uplifting Latino communities and strengthening collaborations with Native American organizations.

This event was a wonderful opportunity to be part of the community, highlighting the meaningful impact and collective effort it takes to build stronger, more connected communities with powerful stories and beautiful traditional performances throughout the evening.
