(Excerpt from a new book I am working on.....Thru the Years....A humorous look at growing up)
As our kids were growing up...
We introduced them to yardwork
At an early age…
Depending on the season…
We had them out there...
Cutting grass…
Weeding…
Putting down mulch…
Raking leaves…
Even shoveling the driveway and sidewalk…
After snowstorms…
Even until today….
All our kids
Still like working in their own yards…
My daughter Elizabeth…
Still brags…
I am the best weed puller…
Normally on Thurs or Friday
I would say…
Don't make any plans for this weekend...
We got yardwork to do…
We’re gonna start around 8:30…
Work to around noon and then…
I will call Lakeview Deli and
Order Italian Hoagies … Cokes and Tastycakes for everyone…
Except Brent…
He only wanted Ham on a roll…
I used to beg him to try a hoagie…
I think you will really like it….
No…He was just happy with Ham on a roll…
The cheaper the ham …. The better…
One day…while we were out working in the yard…
One of our neighbors stopped by to talk…
She asked…
How do you get your kids to all come out and
Work in the yard…
My kids won’t help…
I end up doing most of it by myself…
My simple answer was…
We tell them …
Don’t make any plans…
We are doing yardwork on Saturday…
She responded…
…And they listen…
The Hoagies….always help…
They love Lakeview Deli…
A few weeks later…
I am walking down the street and…
I see her son…
Raking the leaves on their front lawn…
I said…
Hey Jordan…
How are you making out…
He looked and me and said…
Thanks…Mr Hutch
I responded…
You’re doing a great job…
Keep it up…
Your parents appreciate it…
Everyday is a Gift...
