March 2024 - Still a Mixed Bag!

Some Snow, Cold & Melt!

Winter | 2023-2024

After scraping together enough snow to host the Alberta Winter Games Feb 16-19 (see below), we got a decent dump the following weekend, then -20c temps with -30c wind chill, then a 30c temperature swing to bring melting and sluggish snow March 9-10 weekend! It's been a rollercoaster Winter for sure! Our grooming team will do their best to manage the snow we have, with skate lanes easier to comb verses classic tracks needing more snow before they could be reworked. Dust off those skate skis!

Winter Games a Success!

Feb 16-19 | 2024

Wapiti Nordic has been receiving accolades from athletes, coaches, and officials from across the Province in appreciation for hosting a first class event despite the snow conditions! The Club itself is enormously indebted to Lauren Briere and his company, Swamp Dodgers, for stepping up to make snow in the final hours, donating time and equipment, working through three nights with an abundance of energy and optimism. Much snow harvesting and movement was needed to cover bare patches in the biathlon range and main stadium - kudos to all volunteers who pitched in. Hats off to all WNSC Biathlon and Cross Country athletes who were able to race on home turf (almost!) and help Zone 8 (Peace Country) win the Minister's Cup (Greatest improvement from the last Winter Games) and the Spirit of Sport Award (Best spirit of fair play, sportsmanship and team spirit, cooperation on and off the field).Wapiti Nordic can definitely hold its head high and has an excellent base of trained officials and experienced volunteers to leverage in the future for other event hosting. Check out some great photos from that weekend!

Spring General Meeting

Sunday, April 21 | 2024

All Club Members are invited to attend our upcoming Spring General Meeting at 2:00pm at the Steve Cooper Lodge. We are seeking nominations for two new Board Members to fill vacant seats including Vice President and Secretary. The Club is also seeking someone to assist with periodic grant funding applications - does not have to be an official Board member. The General Meeting will also bring an opportunity to learn more about the Club's future Trail Master Plan plus provide input on whether we should revamp our Club logo or not. The meeting Agenda, Fall GM Minutes and Financials will be posted in advance. See you there!

Kids Learn to Ski Program

Winter | 2023-2024

Hats off to our program leaders for their creativity in keeping the Bunnies and Jackrabbits occupied throughout variable snow conditions and temperatures in a range of different ways. Parents will be notified about how and when to return equipment at the end of the season.

Chicks on Sticks

Winter | 2023-2024

The Chicks are a tenacious and hardy bunch, showing up for skiing in warm and frigid weather, walking on ice, navigating the snowshoe trails (maybe going where they didn't expect!), and generally being good sports and showing up for whatever is happening. Thanks to all volunteers who help lead and sweep groups. Without our many volunteers, the program wouldn't operate. Please keep an eye out for a storage wax event in the coming weeks.
