Thanksgiving –
"Balm for Our Soul"

Although popular lore features Pilgrims and Native Americans sharing a harvest feast at Plymouth, the holiday we know as Thanksgiving is actually the result of the relentless will of a woman named Sarah Josepha Hale. For nearly four decades in the middle of the 19th century, Mrs. Hale waged a campaign to establish a day of thanksgiving in the nation. She wrote legislators, governors, and four different presidents, all to no avail. Finally, her plea for the nation to pause for a day of thanks came to Abraham Lincoln, who recognized the wisdom of her idea, and on October 3, 1863, declared a Day of Thanksgiving.
Lincoln's proclamation came in the very depths of the Civil War, when the outcome was far from decided and gratitude was not a common sentiment in either north or south. Nevertheless, Lincoln entreated everyone to give thanks to God for individual and national blessings, not forgetting to also pray for all the victims of that awful war. Let us "fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and Union."

The Rev. Amy Heller
We mourn the death of the Rev. Amy Heller on November 24. Mother Amy served on the clergy staff at Transfiguration for many years, and also served at St. Michael and All Angels and Episcopal School of Dallas. Her blend of compassion and conviction made her a powerful pastoral presence, and she blessed many with her wisdom, warmth, and humor. Your prayers are asked for her husband, Roy, and her children, Noah and Annie, along with all her family and friends. Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.

Church Offices Closed for Thanksgiving
The Church offices are closed from noon on Wednesday, November 26 through Friday, November 28 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Offices will reopen again on Monday morning, December 1, as usual. There will be no service of Holy Eucharist on Thursday, November 27.

Formation for Advent
This Sunday

The Prophets are messengers of Advent. Throughout history, the prophets helped the people of God hold onto hope and look for salvation: they spoke of a messiah who would bring release to captives, justice to the oppressed, and light to all trapped in darkness. Join us for a series of discussions between our clergy and special guests as we delve into the rich tradition of the prophets to hear again their hope for our weak and weary world. This Sunday, there will be a special treat you won't want to miss...you might say it is a way to get a Handel on Advent.

Reading the Gospel of Matthew
Each year we enter the season of Advent by reading the Gospel appointed in the Lectionary for the coming year. Year A of the Lectionary focuses our attention on the Gospel of Matthew and there is no better way to open our eyes and hearts to the depth of Matthew's Gospel than to read it in a single sitting. Join us as we do exactly that on Saturday, December 6 beginning at 1:00pm.
We still need members of our congregation to join us as readers for this event. When you register you are able to select a chapter to read aloud, you may also join us on the Labyrinth or online to hear the reading.

Figs with Kids Cookie Exchange & Party
Join Figs With Kids on December 6 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm for a Christmas Party & Cookie Exchange at the Kent’s House! We’ll have food, music, crafts, and plenty of holiday cheer! St. Nicholas will visit the children of Transfiguration on Sunday, December 7 at 10:15am - 11:00am for a Godly Play Story and Hot Chocolate reception. Be sure to not let your children or your inner child miss this highly anticipated annual event.

Advent Lessons & Carols
Join us for a gorgeous service of Scripture and music on Sunday, December 7 at 5:00pm. This year, we will be joined by our sister churches, Ascension and St. Thomas the Apostle, and we will be honored to welcome Bishop Wayne Smith for his final visit after seven years of loving service to us. Before we hurry to the manger in Bethlehem, let us remember the words of the prophets who foretold the Savior’s birth. A reception follows.

Youth Labyrinth Walk
Join us for a special edition of Crossover on Wednesday, December 10 at 7:00pm, where the youth will gather to walk the Labyrinth, guided and facilitated by Lynn Walters. We will gather at the Labyrinth after sharing a meal together in the Youth Center.

Children's Christmas Pageant
All children toddlers - grade 5 are invited to participate in our annual Christmas Pageant which takes place at the 3:00pm Christmas Eve service. Registration is required if your child would like to participate. Jr. High and High School Students are also needed to help walk kiddos in and staging. We will also need adult volunteers to help with costume fitting, props, rehearsals etc. Please register to volunteer if you are able. More details are available in the registration form.

Come be a part of the Crossover excitement by volunteering to bring a meal for the Youth. Sharing a meal together is one of the Crossover hallmarks, as the Youth breakaway from the stress of the week for an evening of prayer, fellowship, and fun.
