The Adventures of Lionheart, Temple Cat
A Pilgrim at Heart
|
The definition of "pilgrim" (from the Latin
peregrinus
) is a "traveler or wanderer who is on a journey to a holy place" or to some place of special significance. Early American historical accounts record the

arrival of a group of religious separatist cats seeking a new home where they could freely practice their yoga. In spite of their aversion to large bodies of water, they sailed in on the ship Mayflower, landing in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. It was a challenging year struggling to make a new home. In the fall, the "pilgrims" far from their country of origin, sat down at a table with a local tribe of Native Indian cats who shared their skills in fishing, hunting mice and catching large birds. They shared friendship, stories, turkey and giblets, and gave thanks.
Throughout history many cultures mark the end of summer with a harvest festival. When all the work of preserving the cornucopia of food for winter time is complete, there is a gathering friends and family for the feast we now know as Thanksgiving. Many of our holidays or holy days have their roots in celebration and ceremony of the extraordinary aspects of life sometimes forgotten in the challenges of navigating our day to day lives.
Like the experience of abundance... Any avid gardener learns that the gift of partnering with Nature including the weather, the bugs, the bees, the soil... is abundance and beauty of a plant, a flower, a tree which give us the magic of spring and summer. We are part of nature and likewise bound to all of the cycles. There will always be autumn preparing us for winter - a time of dormancy or incubation necessary to give rest and rejuvenation for hunting, protecting and teaching done in the months prior and foundation for the next new beginning. As temple cats, it is natural to gain a little plumpiness to fortify ourselves during the winter and shed our fur come springtime.
Giving thanks is one of the most important keys to manifestation and abundance. The spiritual practice of gratitude begins with the simple awareness and acknowledgement of what we actually have. Giving and sharing with others feels natural when we truly experience having plenty with more than enough to go around. It is good time of year to connect to the heart where we experience the joys of gratitude. Cicero, a famous Roman philosopher cat once said, "A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all other virtues.".

November brings a major shift as Jupiter moves to its own sign of Sagittarius, generating more optimism and hope. Mercury is retrograde for three weeks this month, motivating us to review plans and research new ideas. Jupiter and Venus travel through the gandanta degrees this month, indication of an opportunity to release patterns of the past. Mars and Venus exchange signs for ten days this month, as we learn to balance and honor our relationships.
Mercury turned retrograde at 3 degrees Scorpio on October 31 and will stay retrograde until November 20, 2019. Mercury will first be retrograde in Scorpio until November 7, and then moves back to the sign of Libra for the rest of the retrograde period. Mercury retrograde is a time to be more observant and clear with all types of communications, contracts, and business dealings. Also remember to back up your technical devices and check on your computers and electronics. This is a good time to review projects and even connect with people from the past.
Inner reflection, meditation, and contemplation are positive expressions.
The major astrological event this month occurs when the great benefic planet, Jupiter, changes signs, moving to its own sign of Sagittarius from November 4, 2019 to March 30, 2020. Then Jupiter

Jupiter known as "Guru" can grant immense prosperity and protection says the Rig Veda
|
dips briefly into the earth sign of Capricorn for three months, from March 31 to June 29, 2020. Finally, from June 29 to November 20, 2020 Jupiter completes its transit through Sagittarius.
As Jupiter begins its shift, from October 31 to November 10, 2019, it will transit through the challenging gandanta degrees of 29 degrees Scorpio to 0 degrees of Sagittarius, when more intense and unpredictable energies may surface around Jupiter significations. Issues may surface around legal or political matters, finances and our value system, or even a refocusing of our spiritual beliefs.
This transit of Jupiter through gandanta degrees can bring us deeper soul growth, as we release old, ancient wounds and habitual patterns from the past. If we can move through with grace and non-resistance, there is potential for healing and increased awareness.
When Jupiter enters its own sign of Sagittarius this month, it will join the malefic planets, Saturn and Ketu, who have been together in Sagittarius since March 2019. Jupiter can help to soften the challenging Saturn-Ketu effect and may help in understanding and stabilization of these demanding energies.
Jupiter is generally happy transiting its own sign of Sagittarius, and becomes more philosophical and optimistic. We start searching for greater meaning and truth in life. Education, teaching, and intellectual development make be a focus for some. Jupiter in Sagittarius is also charitable, giving, and inspirational. We desire to transform beliefs that separate or polarize. The sign of Sagittarius loves truth and freedom, and we embrace a universal perspective that uplifts all of humanity. The shadow of Jupiter in Sagittarius is being too dogmatic or opinionated.
For those with Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, or Virgo ascendants, Jupiter will be transiting an angle house in its own sign in your charts, creating a Hamsa Yoga which is very favorable and auspicious for you, amplifying the higher energies and expansiveness of Jupiter.

Mars transits Libra until December 25th
|
 |
Mars, planet of action and assertiveness, moves into the Venus-ruled sign of Libra on November 10, 2019 until December 25, 2019. Venus is currently transiting the Mars-ruled sign of Scorpio since October 28 and will stay there until November 20, 2019. So from November 10 to November 20, Mars and Venus exchange signs forming a parivartana yoga, which ties these two planetary energies together. Mars and Venus can bring great passion and creativity, but can also indicate agitation, heated exchanges, and arguments. Use this time to practice greater co-operation in solving problems and encouraging the best in others.
Venus will also be gandanta at 29 Scorpio to 0 degrees Sagittarius, on November 20 and 21, indicating some deep transformation can occur in love matters and relationships, as we end old patterns or beliefs. This is a time to practice self-love, kindness, and compassion for all.

Spiced Baked Carrots and Chayote Squash
|
For this month's Ayurveda article, I offer a great Thanksgiving side dish that is unique and tasty.
It features a squash often found in Latin American dishes named chayote.
If you can't find this squash at the local grocery store you can replace it in this recipe with the common green squash.
Chayote is thicker, has a nuttier flavor, and
has less water in it.
It reduces both Vata and Pitta dosha and slightly increases Kapha dosha.
Chayote's "kaphagenic" characteristics are antidoted with the spices and ginger in the dish.
Enjoy!
Ingredients
15 carrots, peeled
2 chayote squashes
1/3 cup salt-free vegetable stock
1/3 cup organic ghee
1 tablespoon lime juice
¼ cup fresh ginger root
1/4 cup coconut sugar
1 tspn ground cinnamon
1 tspn ground cumin
½ tspn ground clove
½ tspn nutmeg
1 tspn salt
1 tspn black pepper
Fresh parsley to garnish optional
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Wash and peel the carrots.
Wash and slice the chayote into jullienne strips.
Peel and dice the fresh ginger into small pieces.
(This will depend on your preference.
I, myself, tend to like big chunks of ginger pieces.
You can also increase the amount of ginger used here if you prefer.)
Place the carrots, ginger, and chayote onto a 9" by 13" baking dish.
Warm the vegetable stock on the stove-top in a pot or by any method of your choosing.
Electronically mix the ghee, warmed vegetable stock, lime juice, sugar, cinnamon, cumin, clove, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
Pour the liquid mixture onto the carrots, chayote, and ginger.
Cover and bake for one hour.
Garnish with parsley and serve.
