Brian's Picks for Your Holiday Table
2016 Edmunds St. John Bone Jolly Gamay
California, United States
Grape Varietal: 100% Gamay
Notes: Very light red, almost Pinot-like. The nose is fresh, yet also distinctly earthy; sous-bois beneath fraises des bois. Flavors in fine balance around sneaky acidity. Lovely texture from the stems, subtle spice, as well. Finish lasts and lasts.
Drink if you enjoy: Light bodied red wines like Pinot Noir but a fresher style that compliments food very well!
N/V Mouton Noir Horseshoes and Handgranades
Oregon, United States
Grape Varietal: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Notes: A fruit-driven, full-bodied complex red blend sourced from Southern Oregon and Red Mountain Washington. The rich, ripe, voluptuous fruit comes from Oregon Syrah with just enough Washington Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to give it complexity and structure. Think cherry pits and leather whips!
Drink if you enjoy: Expressive, full bodied "Garage d'Or" or micro-negociant red wines made to be enjoyed by everyone!
Remember, "DROP FRUIT, NOT BOMBS!"
2016 Viña Maitia Valle del Maule Carignan Weon
Central Valley, Chile
Grape Varietal: 100% 100% Carignan
Designation: Dry farmed and sustainable
Notes: This 100% un-oaked Carignan is hand harvested from a 60+ year old vineyard in the Maule region of Chile. The nose is bursting with notes of cherry, plum, rose petal, cinnamon, lavender and anise that lead to a bright palate of cassis and milk chocolate. The finish shows lush tannin of crushed, dried leaves with a well integrated acid backbone that is all tied together by cherry and white pepper spice.
Drink if you enjoy: Light to medium bodied red wines with bright fruit and some spice! A very quaffable wine that is an incredible value!
2013 Belle Pente Pinot Gris
Willamette Valley, Oregon
Grape Varietal: 100% Pinot Gris
Designation: Biodynamic and Organic
Notes: The hybrid vinification, coupled with sur lie and bottle aging, creates a wine that has both richness and freshness. It is easy to enjoy on it's own, and there is not a dish on the planet that it won't compliment splendidly. It's a rich, well-rounded wine with pear, melon, and honey flavors.
Drink if you enjoy: Beautifully made domestic white wines produced with great integrity and respect for the grape as well as the environment!
2013 Terraviva Trebbiano Mario's 41
Grape Varietal: 100% Trebbiano
Notes: Pale yellow color with green nuances in the glass. Elegant aromas of apple and ripe fruits are released with a feel twirls of the glass. Balanced acidity and fruit with a rounded, supple texture. The wine is dry, fresh and extremely pleasing.
Drink if you enjoy: Everything Fall! Fresh, crisp apples and day hikes with friends and, oh yeah, tasty organic Italian white wines!
2012 Château La Tour Grise Les Fontenelles
Loire Valley, France
Grape Varietal: 100% Chenin Blanc
Notes: A fresher style of "Orange" wine. Made with Chenin Blanc grape, which typically produces delicious white wine. The winemaker leaves the skins in contact with the juice to impart more color, tannins and over all structure. The result? Pleasant dry straw, gold and green apple flesh with river stone minerality. Recommended for decanting and tartaric crystals maybe present in bottle and on cork. The wine will age well in cellars.
Drink if you enjoy: A new experience! Well made white wines with complex profiles and structure!
N/V Dibon Brut Reserva Cava
Grape Varietals: 45% Macabeo,
30% Parellada, 25% Xarel-lo
Notes: Crisp and light bodied with an abundance of bubbles. Aromas of golden delicious apples, pears with pleasant floral notes. Dried fruit flavors are accompanied by a mild minerality on the palate with a slightly toasted brioche finish.
Drink if you enjoy: Prosecco, Cava and sparkling wine! Great for mimosas!
N/V Dibon Cava Rosado
Grape Varietals: Garnacha
Designation: Organic and Vegan
Notes: Clear red and pinkish tones. Small bubbles are gently released to form various strings that rise to the surface. It has a gentle fragrance with smells of fruits, raspberry and blackcurrant. Also noticeable are the tertiary aromas of the ageing on the lees which give it more wine-like and syrupy features. It is very full in the mouth with a splendid bubbly sensation that fills the whole palate. Red fruit also appears, even more markedly in the nose. Long finish and great elegance.
Drink if you enjoy: Exciting and lively sparkling Rosé wines with expressive fruits nice body!
