Dear Providence,

Happy Thanksgiving!

This season, we are especially grateful for our neighbors who have generously donated their time and resources throughout the year. Thanks to your incredible support, the Providence District Winter Gear Drive has already distributed over 500 winter items to our nonprofit partners--and we're still collecting new and gently used items until December 31st!

In the spirit of giving, I am sharing a few additional opportunities you can make an impact this holiday season. Below you will also find timely traffic updates and information about upcoming events below.

As a reminder, my office will be closed on November 28th and 29th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. From all of us at Team Providence, we wish you a joyful and gratitude-filled celebration surrounded by loved ones. Thank you for being part of such a generous and compassionate community!

With gratitude,

Ways to Give Back

Boards, Authorities, and Commissions (BACs) Vacancies

The Providence District is looking for qualified individuals from our area with different backgrounds to volunteer on one of our many community-steered advisory boards. As an extension of the Providence District Supervisor's office, we count on our dedicated appointees to advocate for the needs of our District and the County as a whole.

Currently, we have the following openings:

  • Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance Exception Review Committee: To review applications to conduct land disturbing activities within the Resource Protection Areas (RPA). The committee is comprised of an appointee from each of the nine magisterial districts and two at-large members. The main function of the committee is to consider exception requests submitted under Article 6 of the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance.
  • Convention and Visitors Corporation Board: Responsible for the general administration and proper operation of the Fairfax County Convention & Visitors Corporation, Visit Fairfax.
  • Human Services Council: To assess and improve the human services delivery system, including reviewing needs, effectiveness, and coordination among providers; to recommend goals and priorities for service delivery; to oversee a five-year comprehensive plan; to educate the community in collaboration with the Board of Supervisors; and to review and advise on budgets and the annual Capital Improvement Plan.

To apply, please email your resume to Providence@fairfaxcounty.gov and indicate the BAC you are interested in.

Toy Donations

Santa's Ride, organized by members from local police and sheriff's offices, is an initiative that collects new toys, games, books, and gifts to be distributed to children at Fairfax Inova Hospital, Inova Life with Cancer, and the broader community. Donations can be dropped off at any police station or in the lobby of the Pennino, Herrity, and Government Center Buildings through December 9th.

Our Fire and Rescue Department is collecting new toys to be distributed to children in our community as part of the Toys of Tots Campaign. Donations can be dropped off at any fire station through December 15th.

Gift Card Donations

The Department of Family Services' Domestic and Sexual Violence Services Advocacy team seeks gift card donations (in $25 increments) for big-box and grocery stores to support families impacted by interpersonal violence throughout the holidays. To ensure families have enough time to do their holiday shopping, gift cards will be collected until December 13th. Gift cards should be dropped off (or mailed) to the Domestic Violence Action Center, 4000 Chain Bridge Road, Suite 2702, Fairfax, VA 22030.

The Police Department’s Victim Services Division is also hosting an annual gift card drive to help child victims. Many of these children are unable to enjoy the holiday celebrations due to the financial strain on their families resulting from being victims of crime. Through December 13th, you can donate gift cards to help bring a little joy. Gift cards should be dropped off (or mailed) to Victim Services Division, 12099 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035, Attention: Sally Fayez.

VDOT Lifts Lane Closures for Thanksgiving Travel

With the Thanksgiving holiday comes more people traveling on the roads to visit their loved ones. To help everyone arrive at their destinations safely, VDOT is suspending many highway work zones and lifting most lane closures on interstates and other major roads from noon on Wednesday, November 27th until noon on Monday, December 2nd.

While lane closures will be lifted in most locations, motorists may encounter semi-permanent work zones that remain in place during this time. VDOT offers resources to help plan travel ahead of time.

  • The online interactive travel trends map shows peak congestion times anticipated on VA interstates
  • The 511 website provides users with access to traffic cameras, estimated toll pricing pins, travel time and park-and-ride information, and more. Users can also sign up to receive travel alerts.
