A Message from the Office of the President:
Good Afternoon, Little Flower Faithful -

Last evening, we learned the very sad news that JW Hallahan and Bishop McDevitt High Schools will close at the end of the 2020-21 school year. Our Little Flower community offers our heartfelt prayers and support for the difficulty both of these school communities face at this time. I know our Little Flower Alumnae especially know the sting of what a potential closure felt like in Fall 1992 and the work that was involved to prevent that outcome.

These are difficult times for our Catholic schools. It is a credit to the LF community that we are not among those who received this news today -- our dedication, our strength, our courage and our faith, all anchored here at 1000 W. Lycoming Street -- have continued to keep us vital and moving in a forward direction, despite many obstacles that lay in our path.

Sr. Kathleen Klarich, RSM, our beloved long time principal, who also spent many years of her professional life at JW Hallahan, had this message for our Class of 2020 graduates in her Baccalaureate remarks.

The gift of LF is yours for life, a gift to be treasured and shared.
You will meet many who are hungering to know and experience God’s love and peace, especially at this time. Share the good news of LF, your personal stories of roses and prayers answered, of lessons learned and challenges overcome, of lasting friendship and blessings received.

Share the Little Way of St. Therese by the way you live.
Little Acts of Love and kindness make a difference in any situation.
May you be an instrument of God’s peace and love wherever you go.

I urge you, now more than ever, to remember how essential is that you show your gratitude for the gift of Little Flower by spreading the good word to prospective and potential transfer students and families about the power of a Little Flower education to transform young women’s lives, fulfilling them spiritually, intellectually, socially and emotionally. Please help us to ensure that the doors to the gift of a Little Flower education stay open for all the deserving young women of southeastern Pennsylvania, and especially those students at JW Hallahan, McDevitt and St. Basil’s Academy, who are in such desperate need of a sense of place and belonging.

Along with the Administration, Staff, Board and Little Flower Alumnae, we wish our students and families a blessed and safe Thanksgiving. Let's work together to secure a very permanent and solid path forward for our beautiful Little Flower.
Gratefully,
Jeane McNamara

NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Parent Conferences, scheduled for Thursday, December 3, will be online via Zoom this year.

We are trying something different this year. There will be three windows of time within which you can schedule your conferences:
10:00-12:00pm
1:00-2:30pm
6:00-7:00pm
This will be a day off for the students so that the teachers are free to talk with you.

To schedule your conferences we are using the app “Pickatime”. It is very user friendly. The app pulls up all your daughter’s teachers and allows you to schedule a time to meet. The Zoom link to be used for the conference will be sent to you in the Confirmation email.

This will be open on Monday, November 23 for you to schedule.

UPDATES FROM THE ACADEMICS AFFAIRS OFFICE

A Very Grateful Community

On Monday, November 16th during seventh period, the Little Flower Community welcomed Fire Battalion Chief Lisa Forrest as a guest speaker in our series, Sisters Supporting Sisters. Ms. Forrest shared with the community her commitment to working hard despite physical and mental setbacks, her belief in God's plan and love for her as she pursued new opportunities within Philadelphia, and many stories of how other women in her life supported and guided her throughout her journey to this historical moment.

Ms. Forrest opened her presentation at the end to questions by the students. The Little Flower Community is very grateful to Mrs. Foster, and will continue to pray for her and her colleagues. The Little Flower Community will welcome another guest speaker in December.
Report Cards: Sent Via Email

Report Cards for Quarter One will be sent on Sunday, November 22, 2020 via email. If you do not receive your student's report card via email, please inform the Office of Academic Affairs on Monday, November 23, 2020.

A Message from the Guidance Department:
Congratulations Seniors

It is clear that the class of 2021 has been very busy with their college applications. 63% of the class has submitted at least one application and we even have a student who enlisted in the Army.

For the seniors who are interested in attending college but have not yet applied, please take the following into account:

1) With rolling admissions schools, applications are reviewed as they arrive into the admissions office. As acceptances are sent out and spots are filled it becomes increasingly difficult to be accepted. While the deadline for most rolling admissions schools is late in the spring, I strongly suggest that students complete their applications for rolling admissions schools over the next few weeks. A few examples of schools with rolling admissions include West Chester, Cabrini, LaSalle, Jefferson and Holy Family.

2) With regular decision schools, like St Joseph’s, Penn and Drexel, it is very important that all applications and supporting materials are submitted by the application deadline. Deadlines for regular decision schools are often in January and February. These schools will wait to review all applications at the same time and decisions will be released in April.

3) Deadline information for colleges can be found on their admission websites. Sometimes it is simplest to google what you need directly. For example, to find Drexel’s deadline options google “Drexel application deadline”

4) Students are strongly encouraged to check each of their colleges for additional scholarships. This information can be found with a google search, simply search “Drexel Scholarships”,” LaSalle Scholarships”, etc.

5) Don’t forget to apply for financial aid. Colleges build award packages from information submitted on the Free Application for Student Federal Aid (FAFSA). Even if you do not qualify for Federal Aid, your colleges may grant you their own need-based aid. The FAFSA can be completed online using your 2019 tax return information.

6) Please email, [email protected] with any questions.

The Show Must Go On!
How Little Flower's Theater Program Adapted During Covid-19
The annual Little Flower musical is a school tradition like no other. Every year, our students and dedicated show staff work diligently to put on an amazing production for the entire Little Flower community.

While the cancellation of this year's formal production comes as a disappointment to all, Musical Director, Alexis Tschanz and Director of Stage Crew, Kelsie Lilly spearheaded an after-school program to take its place. The Little Flower Theatre Arts Program set forth with the goal of engaging students through improv and theatre exercises in order to focus on interpersonal communication skills and creative collaboration.

Students would work through monologues, writing prompts, and character development exercises with an end goal of each student group creating their own one-act plays. Though the program has been halted due to a switch to our virtual learning model, students were ready to begin writing prompts and brainstorming plot ideas.

While this is the first introduction of a theater program at Little Flower beyond the Fall Musical, the hope is that it will continue and grow for many years to come. If you are interested in joining The LF Theatre Arts Program, please reach out to Alexis Tschanz. [email protected]

A Message from the Home and School Association:
Thank you to all who attend our first "zoom" Meeting of the year this past Tuesday!

It great to see some new faces and old favorites! Thank you to our Speaker Laura Craig on her frank discussion about the dangers of teens and alcohol use/abuse potential. I think it reminds us, as parents, to never assume that our kids are immune to these dangers.

Congrats to all who won in our LF trivia.
If you sent your address, your prize is on the way!
If not, reach out to Sue Galiczynski 267-258-6403.

Remember, if you "attend" all of our H&S meetings this year, you will be entered into a drawing for a $500 tuition voucher at the end of the year. If you have any suggestions for speakers or topics, please send them to us!

Looking forward to seeing your daughters design for our LF HSA Christmas Card. If you haven’t done so yet the design due date is next week before the holiday. ($50 gift to the winner!! ) Any questions please reach out to Mrs. Diehl.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
May you appreciate the "little blessings" of this holiday season, despite the "not-so-normal" appearance of our gatherings this year.
