Steve: This is probably one of the greatest conundrums among humans. Why is it that when we approach middle age almost out of nowhere that flat stomach can become a tire around our waist?
There are several hypotheses for why our body starts to put adipose (fat) cell production into overdrive. Hormonal changes, slowing metabolism, and increasing oxidative stress, are a few of them. A new study from Science has pinpointed a cellular culprit behind the age-related abdominal fat conundrum.
People often lose muscle and gain body fat as they age, even when their body weight remains the same. Making matters worse is fat cells grow larger with age. Scientists discovered aging triggers the arrival of a new type of adult stem cell and enhances the body's massive production of new fat cells, especially around the belly. While many other types of stem cell activity wanes with age, fat stem cells proliferate.
The answers to how we slow down this fat stem production doesn't change greatly. Women especially should balance their hormones. Everyone should adhere to all the optimal diet, supplement, and lifestyle ideals you have been taught. Limit toxicity whenever possible.
Moreover, there has been wonderful research on phytochemicals such as Urolithin A that can prevent adult stem cell destruction, which in turn, can counterbalance fat stem cell proliferation.
