"JAXIN IS GOING HOME"
Jaxin was surrendered to HSEP in the hopes that he would find a more suitable home. He was under-socialized and terrified of anything that moved. Sometimes people would ask to meet him and Jaxin just sat, frozen in fear. It was heartbreaking to see such a sweet dog be so scared of everything, but the staff at HSEP saw his potential! We took him on walks every day, we introduced him to other dogs, we gave him treats and pets and love.

Slowly, Jaxin started to come out of his shell. He would greet us in the morning by bouncing across the lobby and nibbling our fingers. He showed us that he was a friendly, playful dog that just needed someone patient and kind to show him the good things in life.
 
Then it came time to try and find Jaxin a home. The problem was he had gotten so attached to staff members that when people asked to meet him, he didn’t pay any attention to them! We knew Jaxin would make a great companion but he was just not interested in meeting anyone new. We would offer advice and suggestions but no one seemed interested in a dog that wasn’t interested either. That’s when Josie came along. As a Customer Service Associate, she spent a lot of time with Jaxin in the front lobby. She got to know how awesome and sweet he was and just like the rest of the staff, she fell in love too. 
 
What started as a few days of fostering quickly turned into an adoption. We all miss seeing Jaxin running around the shelter, but we are so happy to know that he has found his perfect home.
FOSTER OF THE YEAR
Rio Robertson has been fostering with HSEP for over nine years, beginning in 2011. During her time with us she has cared for nearly 120 animals with many of these being neonatal or "bottle baby" puppies and kittens who need around-the-clock attention.

Rio always goes above and beyond to take care of her foster babies. Her most recent foster case was a litter of four puppies that she took in at the beginning of March when COVID hit. We appreciate all of the time, patience, and care that fosters like Rio give to each and everyone of our animals.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR
Choosing a recipient for the Volunteer of the Year award is never easy, the HSEP is lucky to have many wonderful people who give their time to care for our animals. This year we would like to honor a volunteer family who helps keep tails wagging and the staff smiling.

Susan was the first to start her volunteer journey with HSEP in October of 2018; It didn't take much time after for her twin sister, Tina, to join in on the fun. Together they brought in Lisa, Alex, and Sergio who quickly won the hearts of our staff. This family of teachers proved their dedication by moving up the volunteer ladder to become Animal Handlers, then Adoption Counselors, and Site-Leads to help with adoptions on and off-site. Susan also signed up to be an Adoption Ambassador and ended up with a "Foster Success story", as they call it.

Although this experienced group has covered all the bases of volunteering, it has never stopped them from coming in after a long day of work to help with maintenance and groundskeeping work. In June when they were able to return on a limited basis to the HSEP, they worked very hard to help find fur-ever homes for our furry-residents, power washed all of our kennels, and repainted kennel numbers, there is nothing this crew will not do. We are very grateful they are part of the HSEP family and hope they will be for many years to come!
GreaterGood.org is joining NBC and Telemundo owned stations’ Clear The Shelters pet adoption campaign to support shelters and rescues across the country by encouraging individuals to donate funds to help animal welfare groups with the most critical needs.

During the summer, shelters and rescues face an added stress on resources from increases in puppy and kitten intakes due to spring litters.
 
This summer, shelters will face a new challenge. The coronavirus pandemic is putting an extra strain on already stretched resources. We are asking for your help to support your local shelter as we feel this strain. Every bit helps.

From Thursday, August 6th at 12am PT through Sunday, August 9th at 11:59pm PT, the top ten fundraising shelters will each receive $10,000 worth of HEARTGARD® products to help pets in their care.
