HOPE in a weary world……
The day after an emotionally draining day—I went to Inclusion Coffee Shop, thinking that I could quickly write this article. And booted up my tablet--- which read 0%. How ironic--- zero percent?
Our world is weary—our planet is tired from recent years of overuse—our emotions are weary of the news---another war---hostages--- people suffering—leveled buildings. Our spirits are wearied by estrangement, cancer, dementia, injury, illness and death. Both from personal hardships and tragedies and also weary from seeing others suffer in this way.
Like my tablet, sometimes I am in need of a recharge. How about you? During Advent, we will live in the questions: “Where does hope come from in this weary world?” And find answers in Scripture and community.
Friends in Christ, we are not alone in the weary world. You are not alone. There are so many out there that encourage, pray for, and remind you of God’s blessings and presence. There are ‘God pokes’ all around, even in unlikely places.
For, earlier the same morning I received a text—more like a ‘God poke.’ A message which uplifted and encouraged me. Reminding me that when we are weary, Jesus comes to us through others. As I treasure this moment of God’s love, I am reminded that there is HOPE in the midst of weariness. There is hope alongside brokenness. Hope is intertwined with stress and grief. We can move forward with hope because of Jesus.
As I looked around at the coffee shop, I noticed my coffee cup. Handwritten messages said: “Smile,” “I can do anything.” Someone had taken the time to leave this message of hope.
Dear ones, my prayer is that God opens your eyes to the signs of hope all around you. When you are weary, reach out to a friend, neighbor, family member, or me, your pastor. This community exists to praise God and to love and serve one another and our neighbors. Let us encourage, build up, and love one another, creating HOPE in the name of Jesus.
Blessings,
Pastor Jackie

Ponderings of the Intern: Advent!
Each month, I will write an article on a topic that I’ve been pondering or have received questions about. Enjoy!
Happy Advent! Advent is one of my favorite times of the year, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t come with some weariness, some heaviness. The older I get, the more I recognize that there is a lot of sadness in the world. It just seems more pronounced when the backdrop is merriment, the most wonderful time of the year, and sheer busyness. All of this can leave one feeling weary, run down, and far from the joy we are “supposed” to be feeling.
This Advent we are following an Advent series called “How Does a Weary World Rejoice?” The first step is acknowledging our weariness. Then we will move to finding joy in connection, allowing ourselves to be amazed, and finally hope and making room.
I hope this worship series helps you understand that underlying weariness that many of us are feeling this time of year and also helps us connect while we wait for the eternal light of Jesus to be born.
Additionally, I hope you find rest and rejuvenation throughout the season so you
can truly enjoy Christmas. Take care of yourselves!
Blessings and Merry Christmas!
Intern Jenny

How does a weary world rejoice?
The Last Time I Saw God
| |
The last time I saw God face to face I was looking at a bed of tulips. God was every color of red.
I was merely a mortal,
in awe of it all.
The time before that,
we were tying back the curtains, looking for stars.
God was the deepest purple
and the brightest light.
The time before that,
the city was soft with snow.
God was the quiet
that tucked us all in.
| | |
And in between these small gifts there were newborn babies,
and sapling trees,
homemade bread,
the sound of a church
singing on Sunday.
…
Why, yes, we are lucky.
We are more than lucky
for the moments when
delight and awe
unzip the weight
we carry around.

In 2023, the Greater Milwaukee Synod participated in a unique photo storytelling project by A Peace of My Mind. The series features black and white portraits of lay and rostered GMS faith leaders, and their answers to the question, “When have you felt included or excluded from a group or community?”
We invite GMS congregations to share and discuss the project in worship, small group ministries, and more. We hope the experience will inspire our members to share and listen to one another’s stories, and to grow in faith and fellowship!
We’re currently sharing the project in two formats:
