Notes from Pr. Jackie
I recently attended the Rostered Leaders Gathering in Phoenix, Arizona as part of my continuing education. Yes, it was hot! But I am told the 117 degrees was a dry heat. The gathering speakers, workshops, and worship centered on Rekindle the Fire in you. Ironic for a time of record-breaking heat. A true blessing to learn, worship, and reconnect with other pastors, friends, and seminary professors. There were a few messages that deeply resonated with me:
First, Keynote speaker Karoline Lewis, based on Jesus’ baptism in the Gospel of Mark said to not be so surprised when the heavens are ripped apart and God’s Spirit propels us out into the wilderness to be tested. For the good news is that our God is here. The kingdom of God is around us, believe that our God is here. Thus, we are invited to re-focus and change our perspective to see God in our midst. We can’t believe this on our own—we need each other. I love that. We need a community of fellow believers to help us in the brokenness of this world, in this tough and holy work. God works in, among, and through all of us We are called to work together, church to share the love of Jesus.
The second speaker that resonated deeply with me was Dr. Carlos Santos. He used the image of flames to signify the spreading of the kingdom of God. Another powerful symbol of God being HERE with us! He saw the flames while working as a juvenile prison chaplain. They are all around us as we feed the poor and work to change the systems that cause poverty. So, how do we see the world and systems of this world through the light of the Gospel? For the flame brings the warmth of charity, illuminates systems of oppression, and transforms. In “The Freedom of Christian.” Luther compares the soul that is in contact with the living Word of God to metal being transformed by fire. God invites us into transformation for the sake of our beloved community. Embracing the ministry of teaching, learning, and studying God’s word in community, we can join in God’s mission to transform society from the inside out.
The third Keynote speaker, Jeff Cho moved me to tears. It’s a tough world out there. One that tells us and those on the margins that we are not enough. In the ‘gorgeous particularity’ of those on the margins and in the ‘gorgeous particularity’ of who you are---we are all called for such a time as this. (Esther 4.14) Delight and pleasure are markers of God’s steadfast love. We all need and deserve to know that we are loved.
So, how do we re-kindle that feeling and hold onto that promise? Love is a discipline more than a feeling, like a seed, it needs to be nourished and tended to in order to grow. He suggested carving out time to rest, for beauty, and turning ourselves toward love. Taking respite time to recognize God’s love and receive God’s grace. Studying a flower, birds at a feeder, or immersing yourself in a story or poem. That is love. Enjoy a cup of tea, stare out the window, listen to a favorite song. That is turning towards love. Lament, cry, scream if you need to. Sit with a friend. There are so many ways to turn toward love. What can you do to empower yourself to recognize this love for you????
Cho suggested feeling your heartbeat and asking how often you have told your heart to beat. Or your lungs to breathe? There is so much evidence of Grace all around us. Waiting for us to notice.
Dear ones, I pray that you notice the signs of God’s gracious love around you and know how deeply you are loved. For our God is here, re-kindling the fire of faith.
God loves you and so do I,
Pr. Jackie

Ponderings of the Intern
Each month, I will write an article on a topic that I’ve been pondering or have received questions about. Enjoy!
We live in a fast-paced world. Go here, run to this, sneak out to get to the next thing, eat quickly, hurry up. . . until you fall into bed at night exhausted. There’s a lot of research that shows that this lifestyle isn’t healthy. It is stressful and hard on our physical health.
It is also hard on our mental health. I don’t know about you, but after a day of rushing, I feel frazzled, anxious, and not very happy.
The third commandment says, “Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy.” In the Small Catechism, Martin Luther explains this to mean, “we are to fear and love God, so that we do not despise preaching or God’s word, but instead keep that word holy and glady hear and learn it.” Our confirmation students put this into their own words to mean, “take time to rest, so you can take time for and with God.” They found that the Good News of this commandment is that we’re supposed to rest!
God really loves us and wants us to take a break regularly!

The greatest truth about praying with and for our children is that we teach them by how we do it – not by how we talk to them about it. If we have anxiety about the right words, postures, locations, and tools, so will they, not only because they are worried about pleasing God, but because they want to please us. If we are able to relax, trusting in the Spirit’s deep sighs and guiding grace, our children will pick up on that. It is good for them to see us try different kinds of prayers – labyrinths, coloring, silence, reading, beads, candles, lectio divinia (a contemplative method of reading Scripture). While a particular practice might not be our favorite, it might really resonate with a child who is entirely their own person and has different perspectives and style.
I hope to share with my children the joy of my salvation and what it means to live into that truth, with God’s help, every day – by praying with my words, my body, and my deeds.
This message is excerpted from “Teaching by doing” by Julia Seymour in the September 2018 Gather magazine.

What is a Prayground?
A Prayground is a place in the sanctuary where young worshipers (most often children) can experience worship through age-appropriate worship materials and tools that will help keep them engaged in worship. It's made for young children who are not comfortable sitting in a pew or leaving the worship service. Parents, other adults, and students may choose to sit in a nearby pew, or on the floor with the children.
CTK is working on adding a Prayground in the lower Sanctuary. The Prayground is located behind the last pew on the very right-hand side (looking at the alter from the back). Watch for it to develop this summer to welcome families with children.

In 2023, the Greater Milwaukee Synod participated in a unique photo storytelling project by A Peace of My Mind. The series features black and white portraits of lay and rostered GMS faith leaders, and their answers to the question, “When have you felt included or excluded from a group or community?”
We invite GMS congregations to share and discuss the project in worship, small group ministries, and more. We hope the experience will inspire our members to share and listen to one another’s stories, and to grow in faith and fellowship!
We’re currently sharing the project in two formats:
