The "Back to School" Fresh Start
Somehow August has come around once again, and institutions and students are beginning to gear up, literally and figuratively, for the fall term. Many freshmen are thinking about how they will define, or redefine, themselves as they enter a new community. Many upperclassmen are considering how they will renew motivation or generate energy for a strong start to their new courses. No matter what year or how old students are, the beginning of a term is an opportunity for a fresh start.
Often, at back-to-school time, students may struggle to get past general, vague goals: "I want to do better." "I want to stop procrastinating." "I want better grades." However, the coaching session, with targeted powerful questions, can provide students the time and space to consider how they want to improve how they operate. This is the case whether students are new to the game or seasoned collegians.
Meeting with students at this time, coaches may ask questions like:
- What is your greatest strength going into this term?
- What from last term, or last year of high school, do you want to change about how you operate as a learner?
- What useful information or strategy did you learn last term or last year that you want to continue?
- What personal learning or self-management challenge do you most want to address this term?
- What does "better" look like this term, specifically, for you?
