The "Great Awakening" from
Macon County to New York City
Alabama native and renowned artist/sculptor Dr. Lorenzo Pace is being honored for his creation of a granite monument at the epicenter of the Black Lives Matter movement in New York City, also holding a unique tie to Macon County. The 20th Anniversary celebration of the installation of “Triumph of the Human Spirit” took place at New York’s Thomas Paine Park at Foley Square this month. The Office of the Manhattan Borough President issued a Proclamation to commemorate the day.


New Virtual Adventures in the Old South
In hopes of encouraging everyone to discover local history, especially in Macon County, we teamed up with Auburn University's Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities for an online program spotlighting Alabama's oldest road. The historic Old Federal Road was a major 19th century communication and travel route through Creek Indian territory linking the east coast to the Louisiana Purchase territory, with stops in Macon County, long before modern-day Tuskegee came into existence. 

During the virtual presentation, viewers heard from featured speaker Raven Christopher, one of the authors of 'The Old Federal Road in Alabama: An Illustrated Guide." Over a decade ago, Christopher joined a team in conducting an archeological survey of the Old Federal Road to identify its precise location and historic sites along its path. The survey contributed to her co-authorship of the guide book that provides a narrative history of the road including its construction and early travelers as well as provides modern day travelers a guide to travel as close as possible to the historic route and visit some places of interest along the way. Thank You AHF CARES
Understanding the devastating needs and concerns of Alabama organizations that provide humanities programming and projects, the Alabama Humanities Foundation (AHF) offered a lifeline to organizations like the Tuskegee History Center and provided a helping hand during the pandemic with a CARES relief grant. The Tuskegee History Center received a grant which enabled us to continue business operations this summer. The Center is grateful to the AHF and the National Endowment for the Humanities for their support and understanding the needs of small cultural institutions struggling to survive during this current historic time.

As the Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center, (the Tuskegee History Center) celebrated its 23rd anniversary earlier this year, the current coronavirus crisis reminds us again of the inequality of health care that exists for African Americans and other minorities in this country.

A Visit From Road Scholars
Buses carrying 250 knowledge seekers and explorers converged on the Tuskegee History Center earlier this year. The visit came as part of an educational tour with Road Scholar, a non-profit organization that provides lifelong learners the transformative experience of touching history where it happened. Don't Miss This! Road Scholar Online Program Featuring The Historic Tuskegee Syphilis Study
Join Tuskegee History Center Board of Directors member Dr. Jerry Collins for a history of the notorious Tuskegee Syphilis Study, the U.S. government led medical study of syphilis and African American men in the south. The men were not aware they were in a study, and medical treatment was deliberately withheld from the men. Dr. Collins' lecture will also include family member's perspectives and memories. Brought to you by Road Scholar, this program is part of a weeklong online program titled "Adventures Online: The Civil Rights Movement."
Census Community Outreach
'It's About Us!' was the theme and focus of the Tuskegee History Center's 2020 Census community outreach civic engagement project educating, promoting and encouraging local citizen involvement - completing census forms. The project included a digital newsletter to teachers and educators, a custom postcard designed to reach rural post office box holders, and a new digital board on the grounds of the Tuskegee History Center. Various project activities involved the Macon County Commission, the Macon County Extension Office, the Macon County Economic Development Authority, Macon County Schools, and a Tuskegee University Art student. The Center's community outreach activities were supported with a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
2020 Census Bowl Champions
Gov. Kay Ivey recently said, "I congratulate Macon County on a job well done in taking home top prize in this exciting March Madness-style competition." Macon County claimed the state championship as the bracket winner with the biggest increase in census self-response over the entire contest.
A community-wide effort paid off with Macon County capturing first place in the Alabama 2020 Census Bowl competition. A unified vision, strategic planning, and collaborative actions resulted in Macon County Schools as winner of a $65,000 prize.
