Welcome!

This newsletter is designed to keep San Marino families and community members informed about the latest developments in Measure M Bond progress.

It has been over a year since Measure M passed with an impressive 71.8% approval. Thanks to the strong support of our community, San Marino Unified School District has spent the past several months laying the groundwork to ensure this bond becomes a lasting investment in the future of San Marino schools.

Guided by the District’s Facilities Master Plan, SMUSD is following a multi-year roadmap of priority projects. Project timelines will vary based on sequencing needs, market conditions, and the availability of funds as they are released.

In this inaugural newsletter, we are highlighting the types of projects planned for each campus. As plans are finalized and construction begins, we will keep you informed every step of the way, providing transparent updates and sharing progress so you can see your bond dollars at work. Please note that as designs progress through review and regulatory approval, details may evolve to reflect educational needs, budget considerations, and agency requirements. You can also stay updated on the bond program on the San Marino Schools Measure M web page.

Valentine Elementary

Measure M begins at Valentine with a new 20,000+ sq. ft. two-story classroom building featuring 4th–5th grade classrooms, elective labs, a Wellness Center, restrooms, and outdoor shade space. This project expands capacity, supports STEAM and wellness, and provides long-term infrastructure for growth.

Valentine will continue using existing modular classrooms as interim housing to maintain on-site instruction while new TK–K classrooms and Phase 2 modernizations move forward. Early visible improvements include new playground replacements to enhance safety and outdoor learning.

Future Phase 3 projects include a renovated, modernized library and a new multipurpose room and food services building, replacing aging facilities and creating flexible spaces for students and the community.

Carver Elementary

Carver’s first major Measure M project is the construction of new TK and kindergarten buildings, supporting state TK expansion and increasing early-education capacity. The project includes five new TK classrooms, two kindergarten classrooms, modernized existing rooms, new restrooms, and age-appropriate play areas with shade structures.

Safety and traffic flow will improve with a reconfigured drop-off area. Early impact upgrades include playground replacements to enhance accessibility and outdoor learning.

Later phases will bring comprehensive modernization of permanent buildings, restrooms, administrative areas, and site infrastructure, creating modern, welcoming environments for Carver’s youngest learners.

Huntington Middle

With the addition of the Barth Athletics Complex, Huntington already has major modern facilities in place, reducing the need for early large-scale construction. Measure M will focus on Phase 2, delivering full modernization of classrooms, instructional spaces, and building systems to align older areas with current educational standards.

In the short term, Huntington will see infrastructure improvements that support daily operations, including roof replacement, façade repairs, and site drainage upgrades. These updates strengthen campus durability and appearance ahead of future modernization.

This phased approach maintains Huntington’s quality now while preparing the campus for transformative upgrades later in the bond program.

San Marino High School

SMHS begins with a Tier 1 modernization of the Medical Arts and CTE building, upgrading the Career Center, Robotics Lab, Medical Arts classrooms, and STEM/CTE labs. Students will benefit from modern equipment, flexible spaces, new technology, and ADA improvements that support college- and career-ready learning.

Early impact improvements include synthetic turf replacement, track resurfacing, restroom enhancements at the concessions building, and targeted roof replacements—extending the life of key facilities used by students and the broader community.

Looking ahead, Tier 2 projects, such as new athletic facilities and performing arts center improvements, will be re-evaluated in Phase 3 based on funding, bid climate, and cost savings, ensuring long-term planning for major future upgrades.
