DUKE ENERGY
Giving Tips at Thanksgiving!
( On how to manage your energy use)
For four years, the Duke Energy staff and their families have been coming to help distribute turkey dinners at the Ingles/Eblen Charities “Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving” event.

This year Duke Energy is adding something new! They will have a Customer Service Representative, at the event from 8:30am - 1pm to help answer questions people may have about their electric bills. People are invited to bring a copy of their bill to discuss billing questions. They can also learn how to get connected online, download the Duke Energy App, and learn ways to reduce their bill to save money.

“After four years of participation, the "Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving” event has become a signature way for many of our local Duke Energy employees and their families to kick off the holiday season,” said Jason Walls, Duke Energy’s Asheville -Area District Manager. “Our employees are generous and believe strongly in giving back to the community they love so much – even if it’s as simple as a Thanksgiving meal, cheerful smile and humble Happy Holidays.”

We are so thankful to Duke Energy for their continued support of Eblen Charities and the Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving event. Because of their support, many families will have food not only at Thanksgiving but throughout the year!

You may wish to save and share these handy energy money-saving tips provided below with your family, friends or at your place of work:

Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for all of us to reflect on the blessings we have received this past year. During these difficult times, so many here in our community will be facing an empty table on Thanksgiving Day. But thanks to so many wonderful people, companies, and organizations, these families who have struggled so much through these troubled days will be able to enjoy a memorable Thanksgiving with their family and friends.

Fifteen years ago, Eblen Charities had the privilege to work with long-time friend, Brad Daugherty, in creating the Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving program. Six years ago board member, long-time friend and supporter, former Congressman Heath Shuler joined with Ingles Markets, Eblen Charities, Duke Energy and many generous individuals and companies to provide 1,200 families with meals on Thanksgiving day.

"I have so much to be thankful for and the best way I know to show it is to share my blessings with others who may not be as fortunate," states Heath Shuler. "I have been on the board of Eblen Charities for a number of years and have seen the number of families that we assist each year, so there was no question I wanted to help during these tough times."

Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving

The Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving will be held Wednesday, November 27 th , the day before Thanksgiving, from 9 am to 4 pm in front of the Ingles in the South Forest Shopping Center on Hendersonville Road.

Thanks to Ingles Markets, Heath Shuler, the Heath Shuler Foundation, Duke Energy, iHeartRadio, WLOS-TV, and a great number of the Eblen Charities Board and volunteers, we will again provide the ‘fixins’ for an entire Thanksgiving meal to 1,200 families this year. The Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving Meal will include: turkey, green beans, dressing mix, instant potatoes, macaroni and cheese, dinner rolls, cranberry sauce, and brownie mix.

“Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends. “Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving” is a wonderful program that allows friends and families to share a home cooked meal together. Without the program there might not be that opportunity to create those family memories and traditions” - Susan Riddle of Eblen Charities.

To help us provide food at Thanksgiving as well as throughout the year please visit  eblencharities.org  to donate or mail donation to Eblen Charities, 50 Westgate Parkway, Asheville NC 28806.

Saint Nicholas Project 2019

The Toy Drop Off Boxes started going out this week to local Ingles Markets, Buncombe County Schools and Asheville City Schools, as well as, an additional 150 boxes in other locations throughout the county. Look for this poster as you are out shopping and donate a toy for a child in need within our community.

Another great opportunity to donate will be the Seventh Annual Ingles Magical Christmas Toy Drive, a three day event in partnership with Ingles Markets, WLOS-TV 13, WMYA -My40, Star 104.3, the Brew 97.7, WWNC-570, Rock 105.1, and the Revolution 880 am. The toy drive will help provide gifts to thousands of children this Christmas.
The event will be held at the Ingles on Tunnel Road (across from Outback) and will begin on Thursday, December 5th and run through until noon, Saturday December 7th. iHeart Radio stations, along with WLOS TV, will be broadcasting live throughout the event. Hours for the Toy Drive are Thursday December 5th - 4:30 AM to 8 PM, Friday December 6th - 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM, and Saturday December 7th - 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

New, unwrapped toys and monetary donations will be accepted for the Saint Nicholas Project during the drive and the entire Christmas Season at the Eblen Charities office located in the Westgate Shopping Center. Last year the Saint Nicholas Project provided Christmas gifts, clothes, and other items to nearly 4,500 children who are in need in our community. Thanks to our generous sponsors, donors, staff, and volunteers, thousands of children and their families are able to have the bright and memorable holiday they may otherwise have been without.

The toys that are collected are brought to the Ingles/ Saint Nicholas Toy Store, and organized in true “toy store style”. Parents that pre-register at Eblen Charities are given an appointment time to come in and shop. Parents are able to choose three gifts, two stocking stuffers and a book, thanks to the Barnes and Noble Saint Nicholas Project Book Drive. If you would like to see the Toy Store set up before the shopping begins, we will have an Open House, Tuesday, December 10th from 5pm-7pm. We would love for you to drop-in for this wonderful evening.

Our heartfelt thanks to our presenting sponsors: Ingles Markets, iHeartRadio, WLOS-TV, the Smoky Mountain Toy Run, AvL Technologies, Two Men and a Truck, the Smoky Mountain Hog Chapter, Great Beginnings and Great Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, and all the wonderful companies, organizations, and groups that are collecting toys with our drop boxes.

If you would like to join us in providing a memorable Christmas this year to so many families in these difficult times, you can make a cash or check donation or donate an unwrapped toy. Online donations can also be made at eblencharities.org

Barnes & Noble - Biltmore Park Holiday Book Drive

This Christmas Season marks our fifth year for our wonderful partnership with Barnes and Noble in Biltmore Park for their Annual Saint Nicholas Project Book Drive.

The books are given to every child as a bonus gift to the families as they begin shopping in the Ingles Toy Store on December 11th. Last year, more than 3,000 books were collected and given to delighted parents.

“Books open up worlds of learning, adventure, and fun, and kids who have books and read at home do better at school. Reading with children is a great way for families to spend time together, too! Donating books through the Barnes and Noble Saint Nicholas Project Book Drive gives children and families a great opportunity to experience all the marvels to be found between the covers of a book!”

Nancy McLean- Volunteer Coordinator for the Saint Nicholas Project and former retired teacher

When you are out shopping, stop by Barnes and Noble at Biltmore Park and pick up a few books for the Eblen Saint Nicholas Project / Ingles Toy Store and thank everyone there for their kindness and hard work that brings so much joy to so many this Christmas. We would love to be able to give each child a book again this year.

A Bake Sale…A Talent Show…A weeks’ worth of tips…
BOOsters & Pumpkins Results

Area companies, banks, credit unions, restaurants, schools, Ingles and neighborhoods came together in the month of October for the Eblen Charities BOOster and Pumpkin fundraising campaign. Thank you to all of you who purchased these happy little icons from our area students, at Ingles Markets, Bojangles or at your bank or Credit union.
The BOOster and Pumpkins are the fall fund raising campaign that brings the community together in very creative ways. Bojangles hosts a bake sale, North Buncombe High School raises money through a student talent show, Enka Middle has a staff dodgeball game, and one young man donated a weeks’ worth of his tips to the campaign at AC Reynolds High School! Many children also dress up as favorite characters or have wacky hair.

To date $ 67,317.94 has been collected with more to come. “The BOOster and Pumpkin funds are vital to all of the non-governmental programs at Eblen. Our 2nd grade dental sealant program, the student clothing project, medication and our adult rental assistance all depend on the funds raised during this campaign and others throughout the year. The ability to help people with what they need, without much red tape is what Eblen does and we are able to do it because of these and other generous donations” explains Susan Riddle .

Special thanks to Bojangles for being our top seller, raising $12,702, Ingles Markets with $6,477 in only 2 weeks! And AC Reynolds High School with $4941.76…that weeks’ worth of tips put them over the top! Enka High school is a very close second at $4,835.12.
