The Heart of Eblen Charities
Our Client Services Staff
As you have seen through our newsletters there are many Faces at Eblen Charities. What you may not know is who is the HEART of Eblen Charities.
The HEART of Eblen Charities is the employees. Whether doing client intake, LIEAP outreach, or the final stage of reviewing and writing all those checks, they care for people in crisis or emergency situations with compassion rarely seen. They make Eblen what it is. They do the work of Eblen and they take care of people in the way that they would like to be treated.

Collectively they bring more than 100 years of experience with them and it shows in the work they do. A busy day can bring as many as 100 people through our doors! They start early, work late, work weekends and skip lunch-all in an effort to solve the problems people are faced with. While there are times we can’t solve the problems all on our own, the caseworkers know what is available in the community for referrals.
Thank you for all you do!

We thought we would include some recent comments that we have assembled in a way to express the story of our caseworkers through the clients perspective. Enjoy!

SPECIAL EVENT SPOTLIGHT!
Hoops with Heart!
Hoops Against Hunger at the Ingles SoCon Basketball Championships!

Eblen Charities is proud to announce for the sixth consecutive year, the Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Championship has chosen to partner with Eblen Charities' Hoops Against Hunger as the official charity of the tourney.
We are so thankful to our partners for giving us this opportunity. The tournament weekend, held at Harrah's Cherokee Center  Asheville, will not only provide us with a chance to collect food and donations, but it is a special time for our volunteers as it is one of the largest and most anticipated sporting events in the South East. From the Hotel Challenge to the Ingles Fan Experience, the games, the mascots, and everything in between, there is always something fun going on. And when the Hoops Against Hunger Halftime Cheerleader Relays aren't stealing the halftime show, we are being provided with an opportunity to not only help the children of WNC in their battle against hunger but also a chance to raise awareness for the visiting fans and teams to take home and get involved in their community as well. It is a special time for a cause that is otherwise so often forgotten.

While everyone may know what it's like to be hungry, imagine what it would be like if you didn't have the means to feed yourself. When the inconvenience that we know of being hungry begins to transform into the invisible monster that is HUNGER. It is a battle many of the children in our community face on a regular basis and that is why the heroic efforts and donations of our partners and friends are are so critical. It is through our combined efforts that we our able to assist these children in their time of need and we couldn't be more thankful. For a child, hunger leads to far worse circumstances than an empty stomach as it effects everything from their health and well being to their school work, friendships and home-life; stunting not only their physical growth but their personal growth as well. Every chance we have to feed a child is a chance to save a child.

All food donated during the tournament will be distributed to students in Buncombe County for Spring Break. This truly is an amazing event and a fantastic opportunity to help, and we hope to see you there!

We would like to thank our partners who make the Hoops Against Hunger Program possible:
The 3rd Annual Hoops Against Hunger Hotel Challenge

For Eblen Charities and thirteen area hotels the tournament doesn't begin in March, it only culminates there as, starting February 20th, banners and collection barrels will be delivered to our competing hotels in the 3rd Annual Hoops Against Hunger Hotel Challenge. We are honored that eleven of the SoCon Team Host Hotels along with two additional Vertille hotels will be participating this year as they collect food donations from their guests and employees in effort to help feed thousands of children in Western North Carolina.

Thank you to our participating host hotels:
Crowne Plaza, Cambria Hotel, Doubletree Hotel, Hampton Inn Biltmore, Hilton Garden Inn, Hilton Biltmore Park, Hyatt Place, Renaissance Hotel, Sheraton Four Points, Holiday Inn Biltmore West, Holiday Inn Express & Suites SW Outlet Center, Comfort Suites Outlets, Quality Inn & Suites Biltmore East

Last year, due in large part to this competition we were able to collect a literal ton of food and our goal this year is to shoot for that again! The Hotel Challenge has proven to be an excellent means of accomplishing that goal as it provides a fun way to collect through friendly competition with a wonderful tournament prize as each winning hotel will receive 30 Tickets for their staff to the Men's Championship Game where they will be honored at center court with their championship trophy.

Hotels will be judged on the amount and variety of food collected, as well as their team spirit for the competition. Although the collecting continues through the tournament weekend, the challenge ends March 4th before the tournament. We encourage everyone to check in with our social media for their posts and to thank them for their efforts in the next few weeks as we see how the competition heats up. You may even want to stop by your favorite hotel and donate there yourself, as it truly is a team effort.

"It is a most heartening visual to walk into a hotel lobby during the tourney weekend to see the sheer volume of food these competing hotels provide. While they may not realize the impact their collection of food has on the children in our community, we at Eblen Charities are quite aware and very grateful." - Eddie Gumm ( Eblen Charities Creative )

Jersey Mike's Month of Giving Campaign 2020

In March 2020, Jersey Mike’s will again join forces with their customers for the 10th Annual Month of Giving to raise money for hundreds of charities coast to coast in. The month of fundraising will culminate on Wednesday, March 25, with Jersey Mike’s nationwide “Day of Giving.” Last year, they raised a record-breaking $7.3 million+ for 200 charities nationwide.

Eblen Charities has been given the honor for the second year in a row to be the beneficiary of this huge fundraising campaign. All four locations in Asheville, which includes River Hills Shops, West Asheville, Hendersonville Rd, and the Rutledge Commons Shopping Center on Airport Rd., will be donating 100% of the day’s sales to Eblen Charities. These funds are used to help local families in the community with emergency needs such as, heat, housing, medical needs, and more. Last year, with the support of the community and the generosity of our local Jersey Mike’s owners, $15,210 was raised for Eblen Charities.

Local owner Patrick Dillingham says, "We chose Eblen for the wonderful work they do in the community. Eblen is who you think of when you think of local charities."

We hope you will mark this date on your calendar, grab your family, friends and co-workers, eat at one of the four participating Jersey Mikes locations in Asheville, and help make a difference for someone in our community!
