For Immediate Release:

The 161st Street Business Improvement District Will Be Abuzz for The New York Yankees Opening Day This Friday

Bronx, New York, April 7, 2022 – The New York Yankees will open their 2022 Major League Baseball campaign this Friday, April 8 at 1:05 p.m. against their rivals the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees Opening Day was postponed from Thursday, April 7 because of inclement weather.

With the start of baseball in the Bronx comes the hope of brighter times ahead for the 161st Street Business Corridor and the beloved small businesses in the area. “The start of the baseball season is such a welcome to our business community and the public at large because it’s a sign normalcy is coming back to the South Bronx,” said Trey Jenkins, Executive Director of the 161st Street Business Improvement District (BID). "A lot of the businesses around Yankee Stadium from River Avenue to Walton Avenue make a lot of their revenue for the year from Yankee games. Now that we have a full season with the Stadium at 100% capacity and seven straight days of great weather and games with the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays coming to town to start the season, I’m hoping our businesses can get off to a strong start because they deserve this.”

There are well over 15 bars and restaurants around Yankee Stadium, and they all are ready for the crowds to return to the South Bronx. Alfredo Angueira, owner of the Bronx Drafthouse (884 Gerard Avenue) is ready for the season to start. “Opening Day always signals the start of a warm spring and hot NY Summer, said Angueira. “More importantly, it signals the start of another championship run! LET’S GO YANKEES!” The Bronx Drafthouse will be open on Friday starting at 10 a.m. and will be serving up over 50 craft beers and food throughout the day.

Another Yankees pre and post-game bar is Stan’s Sports Bar (836 River Avenue) which will be opening at 9 a.m. Friday to fans ready for the game and the season to start along with Yankee Tavern (72 East 161st Street) who just completed the renovations of their historic bar. The Dugout (880 River Avenue) will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. to welcome fans back that will include drink specials and a DJ. Billy’s Sports Bar (856 River Avenue), Yankee Twin Eatery (844 River Avenue), Vega Alta Sports Bar (880 Gerard Avenue), Papa Juan Cigar Room (886 Gerard Avenue), Molino Rojo Restaurant (101 East 161st Street), and Court Deli Restaurant (96 East 161st Street) will all have food and drink specials to kick off Opening Day.

In addition to the restaurants, bars and shops near Yankee Stadium, there are some hidden gems up the hill past Bronx Borough Hall that deserves any good foodie’s attention and respect. The food truck Fauzia’s Heavenly Delight is excellent and regularly has lines of 15-20 people deep when the food truck is on location at the corner of 161st Street and Concourse Village West. “A Bronx staple for the past 27 years, Fauzia's is the place to go if you're craving fresh, filling food, said owner Fauzia Abdur-Rahman. “With at least two vegetable options daily as well as always a vegan option, Fauzia's is a small price to pay for a heavenly delight!" Sidebar Café (191 East 161st Street) is always a great place to get a quick bite to eat and if you need some quick shopping visit Concourse Plaza (200 East 161st Street), a mall on 161st Street.

One tradition for Opening Day in the Bronx is the unveiling of a mural on one of the various storefront gates. This year artist Andre Trenier created another mural in the district at Ballpark Sports Shop (850 River Avenue) which you can view up until the opening of the shop at 9 a.m.

On the morning of Opening Day from 10 a.m. to Noon courtesy of the 161st Street BID, Rogue the Magician will be roaming River Avenue and the surrounding area doing some man-on-the-street magician acts with the public and Yankee fans in the area for the game. Rogue is a new addition to the Opening Day festivities for the BID and has appeared on America’s Got Talent.
