Dear Friends,

This Sunday we celebrate the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Gospel for this Sunday gives us a glimpse into the intensity of Jesus’ compassion for others as described in verse 34 of today’s Gospel, “his heart was moved …” A brief study into the Greek word used here can be helpful for us: σπλαγχνίζομαι (splagchnizomai) describes compassion as coming from the “inward parts,” coming from the heart, liver, lungs, etc., as well as from one’s emotions like affectation, pity, tenderness. In other words, Jesus did not merely feel a fleeting sentimental concern for the vast crowd. He felt a movement from his interior that strongly compelled him into action to meet the needs of the people. What was the need to be met? Certainly, bread for their hungry stomachs, but more importantly, their souls hungered for the word of life, so Jesus generously supplied.(LPI, Connect! Sunday Reflection)

Many thanks to Chris Löester, our Summer Seminarian, and Tom Hrica, our Altar Server Coordinator, who conducted Altar Server Training this summer for Altar Servers. The LAST session is this Thursday at 7PM.

Chris leaves on Friday, 16 July, to take a short break before retuning to the seminary in late August for his final year of studies for the Priesthood at the Seminary. Chris has been a great blessing to our parish this summer. God willing he will be ordained a Transitional Deacon in December and then a Priest next June. Please pray for Chris and for all our Diocesan Seminarians and for all those discerning the possibility of a call to religious life in the Church. You can keep in touch with Chris at [email protected] or write him at Chris Löester, 10701 South Military Trail, Boynton Beach, FL 33436.

This is the 3rd Sunday of the Month. I will offer a blessing for all couples who are celebrating their anniversary of receiving the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony at the end of Mass. Please stand and bow your heads for the blessing when instructed.

NOTES OF IMPORTANCE FROM THE DIOCESE

WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER

Jesus is asking us to go out two by two and proclaim His good news. Learn how to make your Sacrament of Marriage shine at the next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Experience July 16-18 in Beaufort and Jan 28-30, 2022, in North Myrtle Beach. Couples who attend Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekends rediscover the joy, intimacy and romance in their relationships, and also become more active in their parish. Together, we are making marriages, families and our Church stronger and healthier.  Early sign up is recommended. For more information visit SCMarriageMatters.org or contact us at [email protected] and 803-810-9602.

Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, held July 25-31 this year, is a national campaign to educate Catholic couples on the gifts of love and life that God has given them in marriage. Our diocese currently offers a variety of educational options that focus attention on NFP methods and Church teachings that support their use in marriage.

The dates of NFP Awareness Week highlight the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood. The dates also mark the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the Blessed Mother. Pope Francis has designated that feast as World Grandparents Day, a fitting commemoration during National NFP Awareness Week!

For more information, visit the USCCB website or contact [email protected]. In our diocese, visit charlestondiocese.org/family-life or email [email protected].

Prayer of Spiritual Communion:
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly
to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen
