As our students settle into school after the summer break, we are excited for their return but want to make sure they have the resources they need to thrive. Mercer Island Youth and Family Services (MIYFS) provides mental health counseling through dedicated school-based and community-based counselors creating an unparalleled program with a proven track record of prevention and intervention services.
Our country is facing a youth mental health crisis and students need support for their mental health and well-being now more than ever. The comprehensive counseling services with Mercer Island Youth and Family Services play a critical role, working collaboratively to support individuals, families, and the greater school community.
Mercer Island school district has counselors at each of our six schools. In elementary schools, to build a foundation for social and emotional well-being, in middle school to build resilience and work with the challenges of the early teen years, and in high school as a safe space to seek support and guidance. In all the schools there is the opportunity for individual counseling, and to find referrals for outside care if necessary. There is a full-time Alcohol and Drug Intervention Specialist at the high school as well.
Our goal at the Mercer Island Youth & Family Services Foundation is to sustain the level of services needed, to ensure our students are getting the right resources, while also expanding to meet the growing needs for mental health support.
A large portion of funding for these vital school and community counselors comes from the Mercer Island Thrift Shop and the MIYFS Foundation.
