Below, you will find essential details on how you can actively support our advocacy efforts at the Indiana Statehouse this year!

The 2024 Indiana Legislative Session Overview:


  • The legislative session began on November 21, 2023 with Organization Day.
  • The Senate and House reconvened on January 8th, 2024.
  • Session is scheduled to end in March 14, 2024.
  • Our monthly legislative updates will start on January 26th, 2024.

A few behavioral health bills have already been introduced and heard in committee, you can learn more below.

Bills heard in the Senate:


Senate Bill 110: SOCIAL WORK LICENSURE COMPACT (Crider, M) - Establishes the social work licensure compact.This bill creates a compact (an agreement) among states to make it easier for licensed social workers to provide their services across state lines while still maintaining important regulations to protect the public.


Senate Bill 45: TRAUMA INFORMED CARE (Crider, M) - Requires an individual who holds an active license as a nurse to complete a trauma informed care training program (program) at least once every two years. This bill aims to ensure that healthcare professionals in Indiana are trained in trauma-informed care to better serve patients who may have experienced trauma or adversity in their lives.


Senate Bill 132: PROFESSIONS AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES (Brown, L) - Medicaid Managed Care: Authorizes the office of the secretary of family and social services to implement a managed care program for certain Medicaid recipients, specifying how claims will be paid and penalties for violations.

Healthcare Licensing and Practice:

  • Changes the definition of a "15-day period" to mean 15 business days in certain healthcare agreements.
  • Removes the requirement for out-of-state healthcare providers offering telehealth services in Indiana to file a waiver of jurisdiction.
  • Makes various changes to the rules for health facility administrators, including removing the need to display licenses and altering mandatory course requirements.

Nurse Qualifications: Specifies requirements for nurse applicants to demonstrate English proficiency, mandates an exam for foreign nursing school graduates, and adds more organizations for verifying nurse credentials.

Dental Services and Networks: Establishes rules for dental services and networks, including prohibiting third parties from setting fees for dental services unless they are covered by the dental plan. It also sets conditions for third-party access to provider networks and penalties for violations.

Assignment of Dental Benefits: Ensures that dental carriers pay benefits assigned by covered individuals to dental service providers. However, providers cannot bill covered individuals (except for certain costs) if they are part of the dental carrier's network.

Administrative Rule Changes: Requires the Indiana State Board of Nursing to update its rules to align with the new provisions.

Medical Licensing Board Study: Directs the Medical Licensing Board to study certain rules related to office-based setting accreditations and report findings to the General Assembly.
