ASSEMBLYMEMBER
Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn

recognizes the anniversary of
Roe v. Wade
Today, January 22, we recognize the court case of Jane Roe (a fictional name used in court documents to protect the plaintiff’s identity) against Henry Wade, the district attorney of Dallas County, Texas. The case, which took place in 1970, challenged a Texas law that made abortions illegal, unless required by a doctor’s orders when necessary to save the mother's life. The verdict gave women the ability to make a choice, and made abortions accessible without excessive government restriction.

In a series of rulings beginning in September 2021, the Texas Supreme Court made a decision effectively eliminating the right to an abortion in the state. The U.S. Supreme Court has, thus far, declined to protect pregnant Texans from this violation of Constitutional rights. Governor Hochul announced that New York State will be a safe haven for women to obtain safe abortions. The governor proclaimed that women should have choice, and that New York will combat the spread of misinformation, and make medication abortions more accessible via telehealth. As the Chair of the Task Force on Women’s Issues in the New York State Assembly, Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn is committed to ensuring that all women have the right to choose.
