IS THE 87th LEGISLATURE SESSION THE WORST EVER?
Commander Abbott and his Handmaids
The past few Texas Legislature sessions seemed worse than the final outcomes. Many really bad bills, like the so-called "Transgender Bathroom Bill," or enabling LGBTQ discrimination by calling it "religious freedom" were big stories but died in the House as relatively moderate House Speakers managed to quell the most partisan bills.

But this session has seen extremist bill after extremist bill make it to Governor Abbott's desk, where he enthusiastically signed them, or indicated he would. Other really bad bills are still in progress and may yet make it out before the end of the session or "Sine Die" on May 31.
  • Anti-Abortion: SB-8, the so-called "Fetal Heartbeat Bill", signed into law on May 19
  • Permitless Carry: HB1927 will allow people to carry handguns in Texas without a concealed handgun license, sent to Abbott on May 24.
  • Voting restrictions: SB 7 would add new restrictions on voting in Texas; committees are working out differences in the Senate and House versions of the bill.
  • Transgender Students: SB29 would prevent transgender Texas children from joining school sports teams that match their gender identity; passed in the Senate on April 15.*
  • Critical race theory in schools: HB 3979 would ban the teaching of CRT in Texas schools and limit what public school students can be taught about the United States’ history of subjugating people of color; passed the Senate on May 22, with the companion bill moving in the House.
  • National Anthem: SB 4 would require any professional sports teams with contracts with the state government to play the national anthem before the start of a game; passed in the Senate on April 8.

What won't happen in the 87th Session? Medicaid expansion under the ACA. Economic relief payments to low-income Texans due to the February freeze. Real reform to fix the problems with our power grid. Police reform. Making permanent expanded vote by mail. Disbursement of some COVID relief funds from the Feds.

It seems that this session was all about Republicans working to show how extreme they can be, spending hundreds of hours on unnecessary partisan bills and ignoring bills that could actually help Texans. The 2022 Elections cannot come soon enough.

*Late Update: likely dead for this session.
Register Collin
TURNING COLLIN BLUE IN '22
The CCDP Coordinated Campaign is excited to announce the REGISTER COLLIN campaign - with the goal of registering tens of thousands of new Democratic voters to make sure Collin turns BLUE by 2022!

We have an incredibly ambitious goal to register 60,000 new Democratic voters from June - October THIS YEAR. Why 60,000? That's the number of votes we needed in 2020 to sweep the slate from top to bottom. Like our hero Stacey Abrams - we've got to do the work year round. Ambitious? Yes, but with YOUR help, we can get it done!

Come to a 30-minute Zoom presentation to learn more about our project and what you can do to help get these crazy R's out of power. Three dates to choose from!

Allen City Council: In the upcoming run-off election for Allen City Council, the residents of Allen have a choice to make. They must decide whether they’re going to re-elect a true public servant leader (Lauren Doherty) or scrape the bottom of the barrel. Although the race is supposed to be non-partisan, in some ways it’s a microcosm for what’s happening between the two parties at the national level. Will we proudly elect solid leaders with good ideas (the Democrats) or will we settle for those with challenging pasts who have nothing to bring to the table (the GOP)? For Allen residents, the choice is clear... (Read more)

Commissioners Court: Susan Fletcher was absent from this week’s meeting. Perhaps she wanted to avoid the over 40 minutes of public comments (the entire meeting lasted 58 minutes). Most of the speakers blasted Chris Hill for his inexcusable email complaining about the Justice for Marvin protesters. Interestingly though, there seems to be a disagreement between Hill and Darrell Hale as to what should happen. In contrast to Hill’s email, Hale posted in social media asking, “What is the outcome we want? To insist that every class C misdemeanor for going outside the approved protest route be charged? To ban protesting on public streets even with prior approval? Are we banning assembly?” Exactly.... (read more)

Plano City Council: In their upcoming run-off election, Plano voters get to decide between class leaders or class clowns. One of the leaders, Julie Holmer, is running for Place 7, Lily Bao’s former seat. Ms. Holmer grew up in Plano and has worked hard to learn about proper governance by graduating from the Leadership Plano program.

Kayci Prince, the other leader, is the Place 4 incumbent. Hers was an important voice of support during the Turning Point Rape Crisis Center debate and she’s been a champion for public health during the COVID pandemic. Like Ms. Holmer, Ms. Prince also grew up in Plano. She did her homework about proper governance by serving on the Parks and Recreation Board and the Planning and Zoning Commission...(read more)
