Chatter about repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, became more prominent during the election season as a key objective of the now current administration. If this happens, the impact would affect millions of Americans. Many people may not realize just how much the ACA protects them - until it’s gone.
The ACA isn’t just about health care coverage on the Marketplace. It provides protections that benefit nearly everyone who has private insurance. These safeguards include:
-
Pre-existing condition protections – Before the ACA, insurers could deny coverage or charge higher rates for conditions like diabetes, asthma, or even pregnancy. It is reported that as many as 82 million Americans with employer-provided insurance have a pre-existing condition.
-
Coverage for young adults – If you have kids under 26 on your health plan, the ACA is the reason why. Without it, they could be left uninsured.
-
Medicaid expansion – In Kentucky, Medicaid expansion brought health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of people. According to KFF, 1.4 million Kentuckians are enrolled in Medicaid or the Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program (KCHIP). Medicaid enrollment is 10% higher than before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2020. Losing it would put many at risk of going without necessary care.
-
Limits on out-of-pocket costs – The ACA prevents insurers from setting lifetime limits on coverage and ensures essential benefits like emergency care, prescriptions, and maternity care are included in all plans.
-
Preventive care – The ACA requires most plans to cover routine physicals and screening tests such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and pap smears with no out-of-pocket costs.
If the ACA is repealed, the number of uninsured people in the U.S. could rise sharply, with millions losing their coverage. A 2024 analysis by The Commonwealth Fund warns that undoing the ACA would reverse historic coverage gains and significantly impact access to care.
Without coverage, people often delay doctor visits and skip medications due to cost, leading to worsening health conditions, higher medical bills, and shorter lives.
Why This Matters
The ACA has provided a safety net for millions, making health care more affordable and accessible. Repealing it without a better replacement would not only take away coverage and worsen health outcomes but also threaten financial stability for families and health care providers alike.
Most people don’t think about their health insurance protections until they’re gone. Now is the time to become informed and speak out about what’s at stake.
