Newsletter Changes Ahead

We asked for your feedback and you responded! In the coming months, you'll see changes to this newsletter based on your input to a survey we sent this winter. Thanks for your help – we look forward to sharing a new and improved version soon.

Katie Antypas named 'Person to Watch' by HPCWire

For the last 22 years, HPCwire has produced its annual list of People to Watch, recognizing HPC professionals who play leading roles in driving innovation within their fields and make significant contributions to society as a whole. This year, the director of NSF's Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure, who helps oversee the ACCESS program, was among the honorees. Antypas came to NSF last year from the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

ACCESS: Winning at the numbers game

ACCESS continues to grow, adapt and contribute to the success of its community members. Below, some significant statistics provide proof in hard numbers:

  • 10 days: Average time from starting a proposal submission to successfully running a job (including preparation, review, and credit exchange).
  • 3 days: How long it typically takes to obtain an account on a system.
  • 7 days: How long it typically takes to start running a job using a specific system’s architecture.
  • 2,400+: Total number of allocation requests
  • 94%: Percent of allocation requests successfully approved
  • 12,000: New user accounts created
  • 4.99: Equity rating (on a scale of 1–5) by race
  • 4.98: Equity rating by field of science
  • 4.78: Equity rating by gender
  • 4.99: Equity rating by institution type

Many thanks to the entire ACCESS community for their participation, assistance and feedback! Your impressive work ethic, stunning diversity and groundbreaking research continue to inspire us and we look forward to more progress from all.

Connect Your ACCESS ID to Your ORCID profile

If you’ve been awarded, or are planning to request, an ACCESS allocation, you can now link your allocation to your ORCID profile. ORCID provides a free, unique, persistent identifier for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship and innovation activities. With a few steps, you can create an ID that travels across systems, featuring your professional information such as affiliations and publications. To link your ACCESS ID to your ORCID, login to ACCESS here and follow the prompts to connect your accounts. Learn more about ORCID here.

ACCESS Metrics News

Metrics tools to improve your job performance

Submitting jobs for high-performance computers that are both functionally correct and efficient can be a challenge. Often once a job submission produces a successful result, similar job scripts are repeatedly submitted by the same user and even passed down to other users to run on the same or other resources without examining whether the job performs efficiently. Often, relatively simple changes to a script can result in both increased efficiency (shorter run times) and decreased wait times for jobs, resulting in shorter turnaround times as well as better use of your ACCESS allocation.

Through ACCESS XDMoD, end-users and system support personnel can easily obtain detailed information about job performance for jobs run on ACCESS resources. Many campus-based HPC centers also deploy an open source version of XDMoD, so once you’re familiar with ACCESS XDMoD, you might be able to leverage the same techniques on your home campus HPC systems.

When you log in to ACCESS XDMoD with your ACCESS credentials, you’re provided with an overview of the compute jobs you’ve recently run on the upper left side of your dashboard. You can click on any job in the list to drill down and obtain detailed information. The dashboard also shows an overview of job efficiency in the “Job Efficiency Report" on the lower right of the dashbord. Clicking on the red "inefficient" slice reveals a list of inefficient jobs. ACCESS XDMoD also shows historical information about your allocation usage in the “Allocations” tab.
