Computational Biology Moves Researchers Closer to Treating Rare Form of Alzheimer's Disease


University of Kansas researchers who study a rare form of Alzheimer's disease used Expanse at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego to conduct studies on how mutations of a critical protein enzyme could be treated to better control thought, language and memory.

Landscape Metaphors Unearth Insights into the Evolution of World Religions


A team from Carnegie Mellon University and the Santa Fe Institute compared data from more than 400 world religions in a unique way by applying landscape metaphors – peaks and valleys – to examine functional patterns of worship and belief. Their approach using the Bridges-2 system revealed how some religions persist or change and others die out.

Now Accepting Satellite Site Applications for the ACCESS HPC Monthly Workshop Series

ACCESS is accepting satellite sites for the ACCESS HPC Monthly Workshop, Big Data and Machine Learning, on May 23–24. Satellite sites MUST be able to provide a facility capable of two-way video for the duration of the workshop. There should also be a full-time TA available to assist with local technical issues. An AV system test will be scheduled sometime before each workshop. If interested in hosting a remote site, please email Tom Maiden.

Meet the Inaugural STEP-1 Cohort!

The ACCESS Operations team is excited to launch its inaugural Student Training and Engagement Program (STEP) on May 15! A talented cohort of 15 students was selected from universities around the country to come together for two weeks at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami for a dynamic learning experience aimed at helping them become more aware of the many career options within the cyberinfrastructure field, including web programming, high-performance computing, cybersecurity, networking and real use of AI.

Introducing a New Workflow Management Capability: ACCESS Pegasus

ACCESS Support now provides the capability of submitting single jobs or workflows to one or more ACCESS resources from a single access point. This hosted environment, ACCESS Pegasus, has a web interface with Jupyter Notebooks to create and execute workflows and a terminal window to provision the necessary resources. ACCESS Pegasus provides pre-configured sample workflows and documentation for users to get started. Learn more here.

ACCESS Allocations News

Researcher Satisfaction Survey

The Allocations team recently presented results from their annual community survey that seeks feedback on the ACCESS Allocations process and software. These results allow the team to prioritize future work, new features and process changes. The survey was sent to all individuals who interacted with the Allocations web infrastructure prior to December 31, 2022. Overall, respondents were highly satisfied with the outcome of their allocation request (50% Extremely Satisfied, 36% Satisfied) and the usefulness of reviewer comments (19% Extremely Satisfied, 35% Satisfied). Most respondents were satisfied with the allocation policies (36% Extremely Satisfied, 44% Satisfied), as well as the allocations process (38% Extremely Satisfied, 43% Satisfied), and documentation (29% Extremely Satisfied, 48% Satisfied). Respondents' free-text comments showed high satisfaction with ACCESS services, and many respondents expressed appreciation for the staff's responsiveness and helpfulness.
