Message from the President of ACVA
Dear Colleagues and Friends –
Welcome to the latest, information-dense edition of The Comet.
You have my warmest wishes and thank you for contributing whatever you do, to the Jyotir Vidya. That’s what we here at ACVA are devoted to, as well. The Jyotir Vidya could be referred to as a living energy consisting of the collective understanding of the wisdom of the stars. As students and practitioners of Jyotisha, we interact with this energy every day. Let’s do our best to intentionally contribute our individual positive thoughts or intentions of Peace. Our Sankalp (intentions) are particularly evocative right now, as Jupiter and Rahu move towards each other. And at the moment I’m writing this, our Sun/Surya is exactly conjunct Neptune, in Pisces naturally. Neptune has a fascinating “alternate universe” effect in the vicinity of any other graha. More on that in Dr. Bootes article in this edition.

MARCH 2023 EQUINOX EDITION

This season all eyes will be on Jupiter, which features both of the big events of the planetary season – Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, Fall for those South of the Equator.
-First on the list: the Equinox March 20, followed closely by the New Moon on March 21 in Pisces. We have Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, and Neptune all in Pisces. This quadruple combination brings the shift of the seasons together with the maximum high and low tides of the New Moon, the watery and big Jupiter, and rapid Mercury all together in a water sign. A “high tide” time for spirit, compassion, and insight, but also a literal high tide and high-water time for weather events. In light of the present trend toward sea level rise and more extreme storm events, please pay attention to your surroundings!

CHATUR SANKRANTI 2023 CHART - ADJUSTING TO CHANGE

The chart of the Spring Equinox (for the Northern Hemisphere) is a significant time in traditions ancient and modern. This is the day when the days and nights are of equal length, and the rising Sun moves north of the Equator as seen from Earth. Think of how many significant holidays are built around this equinox: Passover and Easter, the Persian Nowruz, the Jewish Purim in the month prior to the equinox, and Holi also in the lunar month prior to the Equinox. Astrologers and people, in general,l relied upon the tracking of equinoxes to reconcile the lunar and solar calendars and adjust to the change of seasons, particularly in regard to agriculture.

Gola – Autumn 2023

Gola is the observational astronomy limb of Jyotish. Throughout spring we can observe Mangala and Shukra in the evening sky, and Shani in the morning sky. Guru will be an evening planet until late-March and then will undergo a period of invisibility around its yuti with Surya in April. Guru will appear in the morning sky in mid-May. Budha appears in the evening sky from late March through mid-April and then in the morning sky from late-May until mid-June. Budha’s period of invisibility is due to its inferior conjunction with Surya. The inferior conjunction is the retrograde conjunction when Budha passes between Earth and Surya.
