Dear ACVA alumni, faculty and friends,

Hope this letter finds you and your family enjoying life during this interesting Jupiter/Rahu conjunction.

Thank Heavens we have knowledge of Jyotish to help us contextualize what’s happening around us. One observation about this rare Guru Chandala yoga is that it seems to have stimulated an outpouring of several concurrent Jyotish conferences already this month! I was fortunate enough to be traveling through Europe and was a guest at a beautiful spiritual retreat manor home at Waterperry Gardens, in Oxfordshire, England, BAVA’s Gordon Brennan and company organized a group Jyotisha meeting post the BAVA online conference in May. It was a wonderful experience, which they intend to repeat in 2024. I’ll remind you about this next year.

Summer Solstice

This year the solstice occurs throughout the world on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. It will be summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, and winter solstice in the southern. (My focus here is on summer solstice since I live in the northern hemisphere).

You can convert these times to your own time zone on World Time Buddy. Also known as Midsummer’s Eve, summer solstice marks the first day of the summer season in the northern hemisphere. During the summer solstice, the Earth is tilted toward the Sun so that the vertical solar rays strike the Tropic of Cancer. Visit ACVAonline.org for more information. centered) view, the Sun reaches its northernmost point at +23.5 declination, meaning that it is 23 and 1/2 degrees north of the celestial equator.

Gola – Autumn 2023

Gola is the observational astronomy limb of Jyotish. Throughout summer we can observe Guru in the morning sky. Shani will be visible in the morning until its opposition with Surya at the end of August. At which point Shani will be visible from dusk until dawn as the graha shifts from morning to evening visibility. Mangala will be visible in the evening until early September. Both Shukra and Budha retrograde this summer which means they make an inferior conjunction with Surya and shift from evening to morning visibility. Shukra appears in the evening sky until late July and then re-appears in the morning sky in late August. Budha will have evening visibility from late-July through early-August and morning visibility from mid-September through early-October.

After an action-packed set of planetary events in the recent spring/fall season, the next few months after the June Solstice will be a time when the recent intense changes are digested and work their way through our consciousness and our world. Saturn in Aquarius will exert some restraining influence from Aquarius as faster moving planets move through the opposite sign of Leo, but these same planets will get activation from Jupiter, Uranus, and Rahu in Aries.

-June 22, 2023, 12:57 am Sydney, Australia

This is a much less dramatic ingress than the March Equinox. The Moon is in the 4^th day of a new cycle, making a lovely crescent in the sky after sunset. We still have a bright Jupiter which is just past the exact conjunction with the shadow planet Rahu, the North Node of the Moon, bringing more of the intense power plays and fiery action of the sign of Aries. Jupiter will remain in Aries for many months. Meanwhile, Saturn continues bright in Aquarius, as it is nearing opposition to the Sun, and will be moving retrograde (apparent reverse motion) all summer. Pluto in Capricorn is retrograde and will remain so. Neptune in Pisces will begin retrograde motion this season, as will Uranus later. Rahu continues in Aries, and Ketu in Libra. Uranus is nearing the end of its stay in Aries and is located in the rather intense Nakshatra of Krittika for this year.
