APF Expands Leadership Council
Leadership Council Members based in Washington, D.C. met December 9 to listen to Honorary Co-Chairs Aakif Ahmad, Dr. Vali Nasr, and Amb. Robin Raphel discuss the importance of building bridges between the United States and Pakistan.

Members attend private salon discussions, webinars, and networking events. APF provides a platform for members to convene and organize events, engage in dialogue, and build initiatives related to the APF mission.
APF Partnership With the United States Census 2020
The American Pakistan Foundation is partnering with the United States Census to promote U.S. Census jobs and participation in the upcoming 2020 census.

Data from the U.S. census is integral to determining political representation and policies.

APF’s partnership aims to promote leadership and awareness amongst the Pakistani diaspora.
You can help your community while earning money as a census taker, recruiting assistant, office staff, and/or supervisory staff. These positions are temporary and include flexible hours.

Hijab Shah is an associate fellow with the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.

She recently traveled to Lebanon to study the drivers of conflict as the country was experiencing historic protests and economic turmoil. Read her article "Reimagining Stabilization in Lebanon" to learn more .
Maliha Khalid is the Founder and CEO of Doctory , a platform that creates access to quality healthcare for the underserved by providing a simple hotline number, where anyone from any part of Pakistan can call in and get connected to a doctor right away.

She is currently a Fellow at the Halcyon Incubator in Washington, D.C.

Mountaineer Vanessa O'Brien is the first American and British woman to successfully summit Pakistan's K2 mountain, the second highest peak in the world. She writes about how she came to Pakistan for the mountains but stayed for the people.
APF Fellow Omar Ilyas writes about how his APF fellowship in Pakistan changed his view of serving communities.

Opening Minds
APF Film Screening of Sitara: Let Girls Dream
APF hosted a screening and discussion of Sitara: Let Girls Dream, an animated film by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy on the subject of child marriage.

Speakers included Rahima Sajid from The Malala Fund; Casey Swegman from the Tahirih Justice Center; and Sanika Salim from Unicef USA.

The event took place in Washington, D.C. in partnership with the Muslim Leadership Alliance and the International Development Studies Program at the GWU Elliott School of International Affairs.

APF Leadership Council member Silveth Khawaja organized an APF Day of Service on November 29 at the Central Union Mission in Washington, D.C. where APF volunteers prepared and served meals.
APF Mentor Spotlight
Author Shuja Nawaz Publishes The Battle for Pakistan : The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighborhood
A globally recognized political and strategic analyst, Shuja Nawaz is the author of several books and articles on Pakistan and South Asia. He is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the Atlantic Council's South Asia Center in Washington, D.C.

His latest book, The Battle for Pakistan: The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighborhood, untangles the complex relationship between the United States and Pakistan by addressing the Obama era missteps and exploring whether the Trump administration can salvage ties.

Educated at Gordon College, Rawalpindi and at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Mr. Nawaz enjoyed an illustrious career at several prestigious institutions, including at The New York Times; the International Monetary Fund; and the World Health Organization.
