No, they are not my New Year’s resolutions (but they really could be). They are all the things you can do at our 2018 Inspiration Awards & Fundraising Dinner! This year we are changing things up a bit with:

  • a new date, May 15;
  • a new venue, “The Garage”at the Harley-Davidson Museum;
  • and more fun! Try your hand at “book Jenga” and other games to win prizes, or enjoy a cocktail while you watch the action.

We are lining up new surroundings, new activities, and a new energy to match the new Literacy Services. This will be the first big gathering since Milwaukee Achiever and Literacy Services merged last July. With our partnership, more adults are being empowered to transform their lives than ever before. The highlight of our past events has been their stories. Our award winners ARE inspiring and this year is no exception. We can’t wait for you to meet them. 

Here is an enticing list of ways to get involved:

  • Mark May 15th on your calendar and line up some friends to come with you
  • Consider donating a wonderful bottle of wine for our wine pull
  • Donate a gift card for our gift card tree
  • Become a sponsor
  • Make, buy, or imagine an auction item you can uniquely offer

This compassion and patience, not to mention love of learning, is personified every day in Literacy Services' volunteers. THANK YOU to the 500+ volunteers who power our organization and walk with our learners on their educational journeys.
In the last year we have expanded our program offerings and extended our reach throughout the Milwaukee community. More learners than ever before are coming through our doors. To meet this wonderful demand we need more volunteers. If you currently volunteer at Literacy Services, please tell a friend or family member or co-worker that they can transform a life just like you do. If you haven’t volunteered with us in the past, now is a great time to start!

Additional Volunteer Opportunities
Create Books of Art

Attention crafters, DIY specialists, origami enthusiasts, and book lovers: We have a project for you! If you can fold a piece of paper you are more than qualified to help LSW with a special project.

With a little instruction, you will be able to turn some of our donated books into unique centerpieces for our Inspiration Awards Dinner & Fundraiser. The process is really quite easy and the results are truly amazing. It typically takes about 2 hours to learn the process and turn a discarded book into a beautiful piece of art.

Perhaps tutoring is too much of a commitment. Maybe the thought of craft projects makes you cringe. Fear not! Your help can take on many forms. Special Thanks
Join us in giving Amanda Dawabsheh a fond farewell as she departs from LSW and transitions to new career opportunities. Amanda first came to us as a volunteer tutor in the ELL program at the beginning of 2014. Within six months she was employed as an assistant in the GED program. Amanda was in the GED program just long enough to show off her skills and abilities when a position opened up in our ELL program. Her experience in language education and her fluency in Arabic made her a great candidate to become an Assistant Director of the ELL Program. As Assistant Director, she helped develop lesson plans, expanded digital literacy programming, and shared her warm personality with everyone she met. She will be dearly missed, but her contributions to Literacy Services will have lasting impact. Amanda’s last day at LSW will be Friday, March 2. Thank you, Amanda!
